Reading
Throughout the year we use a combination of several different reading resources which include: Harcourt Reading / Language Arts program called Journeys, as well as chapter books.
Students will:
*read basal books, literature books, and magazine articles for the joy of the experience, to be informed, or to perform a task
*think about what they already know about the topic and/or the task, including facts, vocabulary, purpose for reading, and structure of the text
*make guesses about what will happen in the text such as story events
*use word identification strategies like context clues, phonics clues, structure, or syllables for words they don't immediately recognize
*create pictures in their minds about what they are reading
*be aware of the story elements of the text and use it to organize ideas
*make connections to what they already know
*understand that they are reading for understanding and not just to read words
*keep track and maintain their understanding of what they have read
*use a variety of strategies to save or get meaning when they are reading
*use several types of graphic organizers
