Language Arts

-Reading logs: Reading logs are required 5 nights a week. Students must read a chapter book each night for 20 minutes, record the title and minutes read, and write a 2 sentence summary. These are checked at the beginning of reading class and students earn a DOJO point if their work is completed. If not, it counts as a lost DOJO point for missing homework. Sometimes the students have study hall and might get this completed at the end of the day. Please check in with your child to make sure they get in the habit of completing this each day!

-Fundations: We spend 30 minutes daily working on a Fundations Lesson. Fundations is a program that focuses on the Science of Reading. Spelling, writing, grammar, and phonics are also a part of this program. At the end of each unit, there is an assessment. This assessment goes in as a spelling grade for your child. There are no words to study, as the assessment focuses on phonics skills that are practiced in class. At the start of each unit, you will receive a letter explaining the focus of the unit. We will also email out helpful videos and a Home Support Pack that can be usefull for support at home, if you choose to do so.

Library: Our library day is Wednesday.

State testing: Your child will take the test for the state of Ohio on October 18th & 19th. We usually receive scores in January to relay to families. Your child will take the test again in April. 700 is the score needed to pass. Please read more about the Third Grade Reading Guarantee (state law) by clicking here.
