Gender Identity & Feminism

Gender Identity in Little Women and Anne of Green Gables: Modern Feminism and Education of Gender Differences

Lizzie Tsai

Little Women and Anne of Green Gables are two well-known children books focuses on themes such as females’ personal growth, females’ community and females’ struggles in life. Since the two books both depict characters that comply with or contradict with the criteria of womanhood at that era, feminist approaches are often used to analyze the ideas lie behind each character and plot. Yet, considering the evolution of feminism and people’s perception toward gender identity, this paper discusses how the latest film adaptations of the two books recreate, transform and expand ideas related to women and gender. The paper argues that while both adaptations reflect progressive ideas about women’ rights and duties by the criteria of 19th and early 20th century, the adaptation Anne with an E incorporates more modern ideas compare to the latest movie adaptation of Little Women.

Handmaids Are Not the Only Victims in The Handmaid’s Tale

Edward Yu

Handmaids in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale are often perceived as victims in the Republic of Gilead. As yet, Handmaids are the only group of women being discussed, discovered, and described as victims by considerable studies and research. However, this paper argues that Handmaids are not the only victims under the patriarchal society; other groups of women are the neglected

victims due to their higher positions and authorities over Handmaids. That is, Wives, Aunts, and Marthas are also victims when it comes to a loss of identity in three aspects, including their names, clothing, and economic status.

Post-Feminist Voices in Hollywood Chick Novels as Reflected by The Devil Wears Prada and Bridget Jones’s Diary

Linda Pai

This research paper focuses on post-feminist voices in two bestsellers of the 1990s, The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger and Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding. Due to its popularity in the mid- nineties, chick lit, in which post-feminist views play an important role, appeals to young women by its satirically humorous tone. However, the underlying messages in both novels is the rising post-feminist anxieties that trouble modern women today. There are both supportive and opposing arguments from scholars regarding the influences of post-feminism as well as chick lit on modern women. By relying on post-feminism as a theoretical perspective, this paper analyses the chick lit narratives of both novellas to examine postfeminist women’s fears of loneliness, their desires for romance fulfilment, and their uncertainties about their futures despite all the choices they have in life.

From the Edge of Collapse to Money-making Machine:The Analysis of the success of Marvel Cinematic Universe

Jack Tseng

Avengers: Endgame made by Marvel Studio in 2019 undoubtedly achieved a remarkable success. It set various new records in the worldwide box office in the history. In the 1990s, Marvel, however, faced serious financial crisis and was almost forced into bankruptcy. Within two decades, it has become one of the most competitive and successful gigantic companies in this age. The strategies that Marvel used to transform a company that was about to collapse into a money-making machine is worth discussing. In the discussions of this issue, the majority of the researchers tended to focus on Marvel’s “transmedia storytelling strategies”, “intertextual connections,” and the examination of a single movie. The other key factors and a complete integration of all the factors that led to its success seem to remain undiscussed. In light of this problem, in this project, I aim to conduct a research on the analysis of the success of Marvel Cinematic Universe via the scope of the formulaic patterns, the diversity, its marketing and branding strategies, and the comparison and contrast between Marvel and DC.

Attack on Minimalist Fashion: Minimalism as Proxy for Virtue

Josephine Wu

In recent years, the global fashion industry has been under immense scrutiny due to its environmental impacts and ethical issues. The philosophy of minimalism on the rise in the past decade has addressed the issues of the fashion industry, and sees itself as the solution to the world’s problems of over-consuming (textile products). Minimalists believe that by purchasing less and strictly limiting the variety of clothing people own, it would be a win-win situation for both the individual and the planet. This research aims figure out the ways in which different aspects of a garment can affect the wearer’s and perceiver’s cognitive processes, and improve their daily experiences. This approach to clothing will counter the minimalist argument that the only significance to fashion is that it is a tool used to cover our bodies. Also, by reviewing the questionnaires, this research can gain insight into understanding whether minimalism is effective in enforcing sustainability in the fashion industry, and if it actually increases the level of psychological happiness for the wearer.

Symbolism in a Dystopian Film —The Truman Show

Shona Song

Throughout the decades, The Truman Show is often given two contradictory interpretations by scholars while analyzing its utopian appearance and Truman’s dystopian action. Cong Dong contends by demonstrating the ostensible utopian traits, seeing Seahaven as a perfect place. However, Halabu disagrees with that and claims Seahaven is a dystopia, which is proved by Truman’s final escape from it. This paper agrees with the latter by making a comparison between Truman’s life experience and the story in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and also studying the symbolism used in the film as evidence.

A Study of The Gradual Descent into Barbarism of The Two Main Characters, Ralph and Jack in Lord of the Flies

Sean Lee

Humans are believed to be different from other animals which are feral and wild. However, most human beings can become barbaric when they are far from civilized society and live in life-threatening situation in the wilderness. The novel Lord of Flies by William Golding, depicts a group of schoolboys stranded on an uninhabited island who end up killing and hunting each other. This paper argues that the physical setting in the novel causes this group of boys to gradually descend into barbarous behavior. The setting of a remote island has significant consequences on the boy’s biological conditions and their mental status. The physical setting also influences the characters’ relationship with each other which accelerates the process of their downfall into barbarism. By studying the characters’ reactions after they undergo the events that occur in the novel, one can understand the conditions that can trigger a human being to commit brutalities and to become barbaric.

Manipulating the Trace of Memory: the Narrative Structure in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Ellen Ho

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a romantic film telling a conventional story with an unconventional narrative structure. The director chose a narrative structure that is non-linear and inconsistent with reality. It is debated among critics whether such a structure challenges the audience’s understanding of the film. Some critics consider the movie succeeds in realistically portraying the rupture of memory by following a fragmented structure since this is how human memory functions. However, this paper argues that complex as the film’s narrative structure might seem, it follows a traceable pattern and successfully connects the narrative with the theme in the film. Hence, it can be considered a good narrative structure choice and also exhibits a new level of the viewers’ acceptance of non-mainstream movies.

“That Era Has Passed”: The 1997 Melancholia in Wong Kai-Wai’s Happy Together and In the Mood for Love

Colette Hsu

Wong Kar-Wai, a well-known Hong Kong director, who is famous for using poetic mise-en-scènes, expressive color use, and memorable quotes to illustrate the senses of urban romance. Despite that Wong’s unique film languages and narrative styles have been abundantly discussed since the 90s, the political views on his films are seldom mentioned or discussed further in the studies. Consequently, this research paper will use Wong’s Happy Together (1997) and In the Mood for Love (2000) for examples, to argue how the director uses his aesthetic and narratives as metaphors to illustrate the handover melancholia of Hong Kong in the 90s. By analyzing its historical background, the images presented in the films, and the related researches, the outcome can prove that these films can be regarded as allegories of a series of anxious reflections toward Hong Kong’s handover in 1997 and post-97 era.
