O5S5
Documenting the experiences of the ASL communities in the time of COVID-19
Mission of the project
The mission of the O5S5 project is to document the experiences of the ASL communities in the time of COVID-19. O5S5 has been created from the handshapes used in the ASL variants of “document” and “covid”. We have been observing and documenting the experiences of self-identified members of the ASL communities during the pandemic with a focus on language and communicative practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone on this planet. Many stories are being documented by archiving projects but most probably will not be including the experiences of the deaf signing communities. O5S5 seeks to do just that. We hope that this project will shed light on the varying influences the pandemic has had and provide a resource to reference, reflect on, and learn from these ASL communities.
Videos
We have collected ASL videos from self-identified members of the ASL communities about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are working to make these publicly available along with transcripts.
