O5S5

Documenting the experiences of the ASL communities in the time of COVID-19

Mission of the project

The mission of the O5S5 project is to document the experiences of the ASL communities in the time of COVID-19. O5S5 has been created from the handshapes used in the ASL variants of “document” and “covid”. We have been observing and documenting the experiences of self-identified members of the ASL communities during the pandemic with a focus on language and communicative practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone on this planet. Many stories are being documented by archiving projects but most probably will not be including the experiences of the deaf signing communities. O5S5 seeks to do just that. We hope that this project will shed light on the varying influences the pandemic has had and provide a resource to reference, reflect on, and learn from these ASL communities.

Videos

We have collected ASL videos from self-identified members of the ASL communities about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are working to make these publicly available along with transcripts.

Three columns and four rows showing people from the project. They are standing in front of a wall signing in ASL. Going from left to right, top to bottom, they are signing "document" and "COVID" in ASL in sequence (meaning the first person top left is signing the first part of "document" and the next person is signing the next part of "document", and it continues in sequence until the last person who is signing the last part of "COVID". "Document" is signed by the first 8 people and the last 4 people are signing "COVID". They are a mixed bunch of women and men, racial identities and wearing various styles of clothing. Some are masked and some are not.

Data?

We are not actively collecting but we are preparing our data for sharing. See more here.

We presented our work at #TISLR14! Here's a bit of all of our data to date and see our conference poster here (sneak preview on the right).
