The Master of Arts in Sign Language Education (MASLED), offered by the Department of American Sign Language Studies at Gallaudet University, prepares students for leadership and teaching roles in sign language education.
The curriculum integrates linguistic theory, pedagogy, assessment, curriculum design, and Deaf cultural perspectives, providing both academic and practical training. Graduates are equipped to design curricula, conduct assessments, and promote equity and advocacy in sign language education.
MASLED is a 15-month hybrid cohort-based program consisting of four consecutive semesters (Summer–Fall–Spring–Summer). The program begins online in May, followed by required on-campus summer sessions (typically mid-June through late July). Fall and spring courses are delivered fully online. There are other Academic Plans that may be tailored to your unique needs.
The degree prepares graduates for professional roles in sign language education, consultancy, course designer, and more! Graduates will earn a complementary ASL Teachers Association (ASLTA) Certificate upon graduation, which is the gold standard and benchmark for qualified sign language instructors. However, MASLED is not a K–12 teacher licensure program. Our program may help you satisfy some state licensure requirements, but students seeking state licensure should consult their local licensing authority.
For additional program details, please review the MASLED Program Handbook.
American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI): Those working with ASL (domestic) are required to earn an ASLPI score of 4 or higher. Other sign languages (international) are required to earn an ASLPI score of 3 Plus (3+) or higher.
MASLED Orientation & GLIDE Workshop Requirement: All students must complete the mandatory MASLED orientation prior to arriving on campus for in-person components. You will be added to the MASLED Orientation on Blackboard shortly after matriculation into the program. Additionally, the Graduate-Level Inclusion and Diversity Education (GLIDE) is a required face-to-face workshop that takes place early in the face-to-face portion. A date and details regarding the GLIDE Workshop will be communicated via email once available.
Program Length: The standard program follows a structured 15-month cohort model: Summer #1 → Fall → Spring → Summer #2. Students progress through the program as a cohort:
