DAY 3 - Let's discover Istanbul together
The visit to the Yerebatan Sarnıcı during the mobility was an extraordinary experience of discovery and wonder. As we ventured beneath the surface of Istanbul, in the heart of the old city, we immersed ourselves in the ancient grandeur of the underground cistern.
Our footsteps echoed along the damp, dimly lit corridors as we explored the rows of Middle Eastern columns that supported the weight of the palace and streets above. The guide told us the fascinating history of this structure, built during the Byzantine period to supply the city with drinking water.
The subdued lighting added a mystical atmosphere as we admired the reflections of the columns in the water filling the cistern. We felt like archaeologists trapped in time, immersed in the depths of a city that holds millennia-old secrets.
Amid enthusiastic chatter and photo snaps, we explored every corner of this fascinating place, bewitched by its beauty and history. The visit to the Yerebatan Sarnıcı was an unforgettable moment of cultural exchange and discovery for our group of Erasmus students, making our experience in Istanbul even more meaningful.
The visit to the Hagia Sophia was an awe-inspiring experience that left us all deeply moved. As we entered this iconic monument, we were immediately struck by its sheer grandeur and historical significance.
Walking through the vast interior, we marveled at the intricate mosaics, towering marble columns, and the majestic dome that seemed to reach for the heavens. Our guide shared captivating stories about the Hagia Sophia's evolution from a Byzantine cathedral to an Ottoman mosque and finally to a museum, offering us a glimpse into the complex layers of Istanbul's history and cultural heritage.
Despite the throngs of visitors, there was a sense of reverence in the air as we stood in the same space where emperors were crowned and prayers were offered for centuries. The interplay of light and shadow cast ethereal patterns across the ancient walls, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere.
Our time in the Hagia Sophia was not just a sightseeing excursion, but a profound encounter with the past that deepened our appreciation for the rich tapestry of civilizations that have left their mark on this extraordinary city. It was a moment of connection and reflection for our diverse group of Erasmus students, reminding us of the power of cultural exchange and the importance of preserving our shared heritage for future generations.
The visit to Istanbul's Spice Market was a vibrant and sensory-rich experience that left us all enchanted. As we stepped into the bustling bazaar, we were immediately enveloped in a kaleidoscope of colors, aromas, and sounds.
Navigating through the narrow aisles, we were greeted by stalls piled high with exotic spices, dried fruits, nuts, and fragrant teas. The air was filled with the heady scent of cinnamon, cardamom, saffron, and countless other spices, creating an intoxicating atmosphere that awakened our senses.
Our guide led us through the maze of vendors, sharing stories about the history of the Spice Market and its role as a hub of trade and cultural exchange for centuries. We sampled delicious Turkish delights, savory snacks, and traditional sweets, savoring the flavors of this vibrant culinary melting pot.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of merchants haggling and shoppers bargaining, we soaked in the vibrant energy of the market, snapping photos and immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Turkish culture. It was a truly unforgettable experience of exploration and discovery for our group of Erasmus students, deepening our understanding of Istanbul's diverse heritage and leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
