GALAX HIGH SCHOOL

World History students learned the concept of a stalemate during trench warfare. They conducted a mock trench warfare battle in which they had to react to artillery, gas attacks, and machine gunners. Students the learned about life and culture in the trenches and reflected on the experience.

Dr. Butler was a guest speaker in anatomy class this week. She talked with the students about prescriptions and medical abbreviations that she most often uses. She showed them all of the information that must be on a prescription, taught them how to calculate drug dosages using patient scenarios, and how to write a patient history using medical abbreviations.

Earth Science

Earth Science students have begun a unit on Minerals. One of the most exciting labs of the year is the Unknown Minerals Lab!

LADY TIDE

Congratulations to the Galax Lady Maroon Tide who won the Mountain Empire District regular season championship. They completed the season with defeating Fort Chiswell 46-29. Roll Tide!

CPR

Health 9 students were given the opportunity to learn hands only CPR and how to react in an emergency if someone around them goes into cardiac arrest. We are glad that these students will be equipped with this important life skill. Thank you to our local EMT Steve Ayers for taking the time to demonstrate and teach CPR to our students.

Galax Maroon Tide celebrated Senior Night for our winter sports and academic teams this past Tuesday evening. We are very proud of our student athletes and all that have accomplished. Most of our seniors are still competing and are looking forward to a strong finish and state competition! Roll Tide!

Congratulations to our GHS Maroon Tide All-District Band members. What a talented group of students. GHS is very proud of these students and all the time and effort that they put into their craft.

Evan Nuckolls, Maya Young, Kami White, Martha Mejia

Congratulations!

GHS celebrated the accomplishments of our Honor Roll students by inviting each of them to an ice cream party!

All of our students that made A's and B's for the second quarter enjoyed an afternoon of ice cream with all the toppings, social time with their peers, and a little break from the classroom. Thanks to all of our Honor Role students for their hard work and accomplishments.

This week Algebra 1 students have been finishing up the chapter on slope-intercept form. They have learned to graph a line using slope-intercept form, write the equation of a line if they're given the graph, and how to manipulate an equation to get it into slope-intercept form.

Algebra 2 students have finished up functions on operation. They have now stared working on multiplying and dividing rational expressions.

In the English 10 classes, students have started the study of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. In true Shakespearean tradition, we are using no sets, but using some costumes and props. To modernize it somewhat (evidently the 1980s are still way back in the day), the Roman official character named Flavius has morphed into Flava Flavius.

Fitness I & II

Students in Mrs. Dotson's Fitness class took advantage of the warmer weather for their cardio workouts. Students were able to walk a total of 4 miles using the track.
