Designing Student-Centred Learning in a Digital World

Self-Paced Online Learning with Google Classroom

Google Classroom is your new Mission Control! Using Google Classroom you can set up online sessions that are self paced! You can create tutorials and challenges through numbered lessons inside of a Google Classroom. Each lesson will have tutorial videos as well as classroom resources, ideas, and templates. Even though it is online students will still be able to ask questions and receive feedback from you!

The Emerging Technology Department wanted to create a flexible way to provide professional development opportunities for educators to learn when and where they wanted. This delivery needed to balance the needs of a wide range of abilities and devices. We wanted the perfect "mixed tape" playlist!

Google Classroom is the perfect online digital learning platform for self-paced online learning with any device! The following are the steps and pro-tips for setting up this personalized and flexible learning experience! You will see what we created for ECSD educators who wanted to learn more about Google Classroom. Then you will have a chance to experience this environment and have some hands on time to build!

Step 1 - Build a "Master" Classroom to construct your lessons!

This is a "master" classroom for you to construct your lessons. You and anyone you are working with can build lessons in this space. NO STUDENTS are enrolled in the course so that you can worry about constructing your content in any order without the worry of students interacting with the material yet. It also allows for co-teachers to have access to the same content for their own classes. You add co-teachers in the "about" section.

Step 2 - Build your assignments! 4 Pro-tips for Success!

Create a mixtape of learning. What is the perfect mix of activities to help them along this road trip alone?

Numbering assignments helps for your participants to follow a flow & keep track of learning. It also allows you to re-use a post MUCH easier!

Screen record your lesson! This allows you to be the face of you lessons, provides visual examples and allows students to pause, skip and repeat.

Step 3 - Build your "live" classroom by reusing posts!

By reusing a post you can now post the assignments in the correct cronological order with the last lessons on the bottom (posted first) and the first lesson at the top (posted last).

Participants can now follow along from top to bottom. They can skip the lessons they already know and focus on what they need!

Step 4 - Welcome Participants and Share the Class Code!

Step 5 - Feedback and Participation is crucial!

There are two ways to check in with participants, give feedback and answer questions! This is where email notifications are very helpful for timely responses.

Step 6 - Time to Build Your Own Classroom!
