Doctoral INPhINIT Fellowships Programme - Incoming. Call for Applications 2022

PhD Position: From organic waste to sustainable fertilizers - A safe circular economy model? | LEPABE - Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy
Position Description: Currently, the economic model follows a linear pattern, which is based on production-consumption-creation of waste chain. Thus, there is an extensive exploration of raw materials, which results in the rapid depletion of natural resources, an increase in the price of marketed products and disastrous consequences for the environment, with the increase in the amount of waste produced and the need for new solutions for its management. Contrary to this trend, the circular economy model emerged, promoting the use of waste as raw materials to create new products in a more sustainable way. One example is the production of fertilizers. The vast majority is manufactured based on mineral deposits and fossil fuels. However, the European Commission has set a goal of 30% reduction of non-renewable resources in fertilizer production. This can only be achieved if waste valorisation can be done. Although a promising solution to sustainably handle the disposal of industrial and agricultural biodegradable by-products, the manufactured products may pose risks to soils and to the safety of farming goods due to the potential presence of pollutants, such as emerging contaminants. Lacking studies targeting environmental and human health risks associated with these organic waste-based fertilizers application on croplands, this project aims to improve the knowledge on this topic by providing data on the occurrence of emerging contaminants (e.g. fragrances, UV-filters, siloxanes, phytopharmaceuticals, etc.), assessing whether their application to agricultural fields may promote the migration of these contaminants to soils and plants, and assessing the risks associated to this practice.

21st Webinar - LEPABE Talk

Dr. Vera Homem, AGRONAUT principal investigator was invited to participate in the LEPABE Talks webinar, a weekly outreach activity that aims to share ideas, connect and inspire LEPABE Research Community.
Talk summaryThe reuse of sewage sludge in agricultural fields as fertilizers has raised a growing concern, particularly with the possible migration of organic contaminants present in sludge to soil and crops. There are still insufficient studies to prove that there are no real environmental and human health risks. Therefore, the AGRONAUT project intends to contribute to improve the knowledge on the safety use of sewage sludge on cropland. Vera Homem will present the main goals and results of the this project.
