The most recent bathymetrical survey of the lake dates to early 1960's. It is necessary to update the information about the lake bottom using high-resolution instruments.

Almost nothing is known about transport and mixing processes in Lake Garda. Three-dimensional modelling, in-situ data, and remote sensing will be combined to advance the understanding of mixing and circulation patterns in the lake.
Field work is currently ongoing within a collaboration between the Utrecht University and the University of Trento.
Partners possibly involved:
Lake circulation is primarily driven by wind, and the wind field is highly non-stationary and non-uniform.
Currently, a modelling chain WRF-Delft3D is being used at University of Trento.
The final goal is to provide a real-time model of the whole system with short-term predictions.
Partners possibly involved:
Lake ecology is significantly influenced by the transport in the lake (both horizontal and vertical).
Partners possibly involved:
Lake Garda is a meromictic lake and complete mixing occurs with a return period of some years. There are evidences that this period is increasing, and concerns about the effect of climate change on it.
Partners possibly involved:
Lake users (sailors, windsurfers, tourists, locals) may collect a lot of information. Within a "citizen science" approach, it might be possible to use low-cost sensors to obtain a spatially distributed survey of physical and chemical quantities.
Moreover, the qualitative knowledge of the users can be translated into quantitative information to feed in process-based models for calibration and validation.

After the first International Scientific Workshop on "Integrating monitoring and modelling of water quality and meteo-climatological processes", held in Trento on 2 February 2017, there is the common intention to organize such a workshop dedicated to Lake Garda on an annual basis, as an opportunity for researchers to facilitate collaboration, to exchange knowledge, and to foster the dialogue among colleagues from different disciplines.
Partners possibly involved:
An integrated research center has been recently proposed as a strategic project of the University of Trento. The Center should provide the framework in which synergies among different disciplines can grow. Eight departments and centers of the University of Trento are involved in the proposal.
Partners possibly involved:
Civil Protection and the Fire Fighters have strong problems in searching for lost people in a big water body as Lake Garda. Developing a real-time model can provide indications about currents at different depths, and hence help localizing the most probable region to search in.
