This MT-BC has been conducting a music therapy group twice per month for autistic teens and young adults. Prior to meeting with the group members, the MT-BC emailed with one of the group member's mother, who is the primary liaison between the MT-BC and the group members/parents. From these emails, the MT-BC was able to gather an understanding of where sessions would be held, the age/diagnosis of group members, and how many people would be in each group. The MT-BC and parent liaison also decided that groups would be held twice a month, on Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:30pm. The parent liaison was very excited to have music therapy groups, as they had not had them in a while. The parent liaison told the MT-BC that the group members seem to really enjoy music, and it was a nice way to encourage social gatherings.
Anywhere from 6-8 group members attend each music therapy session. The music therapy sessions take place in the evening at a day program center. The group members range in age from 14-21 years, and they all have a primary diagnosis of autism. Some of the group members know each other from school and other extracurricular activities, however some of the group members only interact during the music therapy group. The parents/guardians of the group members sit in the back of the room during sessions, as there is not another space for them to congregate. The parents/guardians will occasionally lend a hand during sessions, but they mostly do not participate in the sessions.
