In January of 2019, the Sunrise movement supported and co-signed on a letter that described nuclear power as "dirty energy". Critics reacted to this move since nuclear power plants produce no greenhouse gases. Moves like this have led to people wondering what the true intention of the Sunrise Movement is and if they truly just care about clean energy.
Alex O'Keefe served as the creative director of the sunrise movement until June of 2021 when he was fired. O'Keefe claims he was fired because he accused his colleagues of ignoring the demands of black members and mostly focusing on the demands of donors. O'Keefe describes his time as "hellish" and that billionaires only donate to the organization because “there are South American [and] African countries to pillage for lithium and other resources necessary for Green energy.” The CEO responded by saying O'Keefe was purely fired for not showing up to work.
In July 2021, the Sunrise Movement wrote to Biden and Congress urging them to cooperate better with China and that bipartisan critism of China leads to more racism in America and lessens the ability to agree on climate. This letter was written as China continues to put Muslims into conversion camps and violate human rights issues.
The Sunrise Movement faces criticism for workplace cultures that attempted to cover up episodes of racism and abuse, it is also facing allegations of “tokenizing” its members of color for political advantage. More generally, Sunrise has been criticized for bringing in a hodgepodge of left causes ranging from Palestinian liberation to policing into its messaging and programming, leading to a sense that the group lacks direction and coherence.
The lack of representation within the green movement as a whole. The sunrise movement is not excluded and reflects the pattern of “whiteness” within the environmental sphere. The lack of representation for People of color comes from a variety of factors that stem from environmental racism. Environmental racism is characterized by a system of policies that bar people of color from access to green spaces. The barriers that people of color face within systems of oppression inhibit their participation in the green movement as they are constantly fighting for other rights. Thus they are disproportionately affected by the detrimental effects of the climate crises and yet are unable to fight against it. While the sunrise movement pursues environmental justice it does so from a white sphere.
“By not addressing these issues, we have created an exclusionary professional field and culture in which people of color — if they are able to surpass immediate barriers to the field — must balance protection of the environment with protection of their own wellbeing, which is constantly under attack.”

“To make true change, she and others told BuzzFeed News, requires changing Sunrise’s core strategy and goals both to be more supportive of people of color already in the organization and to be more deliberate in attracting people of color to join.”

POC within the sunrise movement felt “tokenized”. This stems from the lack of representation within the green sphere. Sunrise allegedly offered little support/ recognition for the work performed by POC. The core strategies of the sunrise movement are in many ways alienating. There are no active efforts made by the sunrise movement to attract POC in a manner that doesn't use their status as minorities as a performative symbol.
The strategy has paid off. Sunrise has successfully popularized and refocused public discourse on the Green New Deal since 2018. While the GND is demonized by conservative media and shunned by centrist Democrats, many of its core policies enjoy widespread public support. The other pillar of Sunrise's efforts has been the mobilization of a small army of volunteers to knock on doors and make phone calls for progressive local and Congressional races, which has resulted in a growing crop of new electeds who support GND-style messaging and legislation.
