research

My research fits best into the areas of human-computer interaction, computer-mediated communication, and social informatics. My work broadly examines how people use social, digital, and interactive media as well as various forms of public data to form and maintain communities. I have studied how marginalized youth and other vulnerable groups use social media for social support, and how communities use data and digital media to facilitate communal activism and social change. I am particularly interested in exploring how different forms of media and data intersect with existing community infrastructures in ways that support and enhance positive social connections. In my current position, I am using my burgeoning expertise in user experience research to apply design theory and perspective to these research areas.
