SUPPORT all students, especially those that are struggling
EMPATHIZE with struggling students
Use GROWTH MINDSET feedback
Use student NAMES, even for harder-to-pronounce names
Engage WITHDRAWN students that may be struggling
Redirect Questions and FOSTER COLLABORATION, instead of simply answering: ask nearby students what they think; respond with a question (e.g. what have you tried so far? what parts are you understanding?)
Use Wait Time - wait 7 seconds after asking a question, before asking a follow-up or answering it.
Check for Understanding in ALL students, even quiet ones
ASK closed question(s) to see where confusion is
Ask OPEN questions to make answers more safe or meaningful
END with closed questions to CHECK UNDERSTANDING
Practice wait time to give students time to think about and respond
Kindly pull a student aside to check in on how they are doing and how you can help
Make uncertainty safe: ask open questions; embrace complexity rather than oversimplifying things
Resist a single right answer: generate multiple approaches to a problem
Examine your assumptions about students: become more aware of implicit biases
Foster a growth mindset by encouraging effort and trying different strategies
Reduce anonymity: learn students’ names and encourage them to learn yours
Model inclusive language, behavior and attitudes: involve everybody, including withdrawn students
Address tensions explicitly: if tensions exist among a group of between LA + student, talk about these
Facilitate active listening: validate/paraphrase student responses + encourage others to do the same
Comfort and support others that are struggling or in distress.
Give constructive and specific feedback to help others grow.
Listen actively to understand what others are saying.
Genuinely take an interest in others’ culture
Pronouncing names correctly
