Name/title of the project: Harry Levitt Tech Support

Duration of the project: (i.e. start and stop date):  Ongoing position

Will this be an ongoing project where the system(s) will need to be constantly maintained? Harry Levitt will need tech support from time-to-time. In the past someone has been able to come on to my computer and help me solve whatever the problem is.

How many hours per week: As needed but usually less than 1 hour a month

What specific skillsets do you require CS grad students to have? Ability to work on/troubleshoot PC

Will this be paid?  Most of the “projects” will be a quick fix (15 to 30 minutes) so I think it would be fair to prorate the hourly rate (to the nearest 15 minutes) with a minimum of 15 minutes for any particular session. So for sessions less that one hour, it would be either 25% or 50% or 75% of the hourly rate. Thus the hourly rate is $100 an hour.

For questions/to apply for this position please contact Harry Levitt at Hlevitt@mackfinancial.com or call 323-445-7995

Duration of the project: (i.e. start and stop date)

Start date - immediate

Stop date - September 2024

Will this be an ongoing project where the system(s) will need to be constantly maintained?

The project is not expected to require ongoing system maintenance post-completion

How many hours per week:

Approximately 2-3 hrs per week

What specific skillsets do you require CS grad students to have?

Mobile application development (iOS/Android)

Prior experience in user interface design

What is the scope of the project in proportion to your contribution?

The majority of my contribution will be in the form of specialized medical content, covering all core competencies in Plastic Surgery. This includes a comprehensive educational video curriculum that I will develop and provide. The CS student's role would mainly focus on the technical aspects of creating the application and implementing the user interface.

Will this be paid? If not, please provide justification as to why not?

Currently, we have not secured funding, but are in the process of applying for a $10,000 grant from the Department of Veteran Affairs. If acquires, these funds will be allocated to the development of the application, specifically compensating the student developer. In the meantime, I am open to discussing compensation that would come directly from me.

If the CS student is the one creating most of the API, will the CS grad student retain IP rights for the ML system they create? Or will you retain the IP rights to the ML system?

While the API is a crucial part of the technical components, the primary intellectual property of this application lies in its specialized medical content and educational curriculum which my team and I will be providing. Given the content-driven nature of the application, we feel it may be appropriate for us to retain the intellectual property rights pertaining to the app's content.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate potential to teach core and elective computer science courses for majors and non-majors across all levels of the curriculum. Beyond this, the department provides opportunities to teach in the College’s first year seminar program, supervise senior capstone projects, develop new courses that integrate research interests with teaching, and contribute to shaping departmental curriculum. The standard annual teaching load is five courses.

The successful candidate will further demonstrate potential to sustain an active scholarly or creative research agenda and to participate in faculty governance, mentorship, or other forms of service that contribute to the overall functioning of the college. The College provides strong institutional support for the teacher-scholar model, including a robust program of student-faculty research grants, support for seeking external grants, a generous pre-tenure sabbatical leave program, and further support for professional development in both research and teaching.

With growing cohorts of students of historically marginalized identities, including women, international students, and domestic students of color, the Department strives to foster a welcoming learning community with an emphasis on active learning and collaborative problem solving. Reaching beyond Whitman, CS faculty seek to increase participation in computing through CS education research and advocacy, design for accessibility, and the summer STEM camp with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

Whitman College is committed to fostering an inclusive learning community that values diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives. In the cover letter, candidates should describe their interest in teaching undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction. In doing so, candidates should address how their lived experiences and classroom and scholarly practices will advance equity and inclusion in the learning environment and help Whitman promote antiracist, systemic change.

Name/title of the project: Eye Movement Tracking Software for Virtual Reality Headset.

Duration of the project:  Can start immediately. This will likely be an ongoing effort. If this product will ultimately be brought to the market, it would be ideal to have someone involved long term.

Will this be an ongoing project where the system(s) will need to be constantly maintained? TBD  by computer science student, software will likely need regular maintenance after completion.

How many hours per week: The majority of the time commitment will be at the beginning of the project, then minimal involvement from time to time troubleshooting/updating versions as we gain more experience and collect data using the software.

What specific skillsets do you require CS grad students to have? Virtual reality software development.

What is the scope of the project in proportion to your contribution?

The project will involve creation of a virtual reality software in order to test visual field, extra ocular motility and eye alignment. The computer science student will be responsible for creating the software. Our team will trial the software on patients and provide feedback for improvement. We will continue to work together collaboratively to produce a useful product. Our team will approach industry when the product is ready to be taken to market.

Will this be paid? If not, please provide justification as to why not?

This is flexible based on the student's preference. The computer science student could prefer to get paid, otherwise he/she will be given equity in the product and will thus be compensated when the product is brought to market.

If the CS student is the one creating most of the API, will the CS grad student retain IP rights for the ML system they create? Or will you retain the IP rights to the ML system?

This is flexible based on the student's preference. If the computer science student prefers to be paid, they will not retain IP rights, and vice versa.
