The 2030 census is coming up: What will you do?
Johnny and Victor contrast in their opinion on adding a separate category of MENA to the census. While Vicor states that Egyptian individuals should stay as White in the US census, Johnny proposes adding a separate MENA category.
Victor proposes that Egyptian individuals should stay classified as white to be considered part of the majority in the United States. Being part of the majority will hopefully correlate with receiving the benefits of being White.
Johnny, on the other hand, believes that a separate category of MENA or Egyptian should be added to the census. He states adding this category would make quantification of the United State’s demographics would make the census more accurate. Additionally, in his reasoning, Johnny refers to the decline of the percentage of the category of ‘White’ in the last 2020 Census, noting that even this includes other individuals that may not directly be white (Jones, 2021).
