The opportunity to work with visiting professor Patrik Svensson in Digital Humanities at UCLA and Professor of Humanities and Information Technology at Umeå University allowed me to continue to expand on my knowledge on the growing network of Digital Humanities work and practitioners. While my work builds discussions around the use of digital technologies in association with art and art historical contexts to ask greater ontological questions regarding humanity’s relationship with digital technology, one main component reflects on the emergence of digital humanities as a field in response to the experimentation and incorporation of digital methods in conducting humanities research. Up until my work on the DH Seminar series, my encounters with DH had been localized through my work at UCLA and the Getty Research Institute. In working with visiting Professor Svensson, I was researching other scholars and programs doing new digital humanities work outside of UCLA, assisting with networking for DH events to be hosted at UCLA, and experimenting with the use of technology in capturing and sharing DH work and discussion.
In addition, virtual space and virtual reality are central topics within my research. Working with Professor Svensson on how to incorporate live streaming and/or 360 video in the capturing, archiving, and sharing of DH events and discussions provided me with examples of how digital tools are being utilized and responded to within academic settings, both online and off. I generated analyzable data and that myself and others would have access to in the aftermath of the event to examine over time, providing an cinematic archive for the series.
