STEP 2: Review Course Info
Buenos Aires Immersion Courses
While in Buenos Aires, if you have NOT completed four semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent, you will take
SPA 280.1 - Spanish in Action (3 credits)
If your proficiency level is equivalent to SPA 300 or above (four semesters or more), you will take
SPA 380.1 - Interculturality, Diversity, and Social Justice in Contemporary Argentina (3 credits)
Graduate students may petition to take either course at the 600-level with additional work required.
Santiago Courses
Spanish Language
Because the language courses are not directly equivalent to U.S. university Spanish courses, it is possible that a course will repeat some previous study. These classes each carry 3 credits:
SPA 380.2 – Advanced-Intermediate Spanish I
SPA 480.53 – Advanced-Intermediate Spanish II
SPA 480.54 – Advanced Language Usage
Obtain approval for the most appropriate Spanish language course(s) based on your background in the language. Visiting students should refer to the course descriptions on our website and consult with an advisor in the languages department of your home school to select the appropriate language level. Your level will be confirmed with a placement test in Santiago.
Signature Seminar
HST 406/IRP/LAS/SPA 334/PSC 428 – Contemporary Issues in Chile and Latin America (3 credits). This traveling seminar is taught in in Spanish. Students registering the course for credit under HST, IRP, LAS, or PSC may attend optional review sessions in English. You may not drop the Signature Seminar. (Graduate students may petition to take the seminar at the 600-level with additional work required.)
Syracuse Santiago Center Featured Course (optional)
HST/IRP/LAS/PSC/SPA 424/PAI 624 – Dictatorships, Human Rights, and Historical Memory in Chile and the Southern Cone (3 credits) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about Chile's recent turbulent history from those who experienced it. Instruction is in Spanish with review sessions in English for students who need extra language support. (Please note: Students who attend these review sessions or complete assignments in English are not eligible to receive SPA credit for the course.) The course is taught by Santiago Center Director Dr. Mauricio Paredes. Additional work is required of graduate students who register at the 600-level.
Take this chance to bear witness. This course will forever change the way you think about Chile, the people you meet and study with there, and global human rights.
Local University Course Offerings
You will round out your schedule with 1‒3 local university classes. Dozens of local university courses (identified by a 280, 380, 480 or 580 course number) have been pre-approved for Syracuse University credit. (Courses numbered 680 are open to graduate students only.)
Indicate your first-choice courses + several alternative courses (in case first choices are not available). You should have alternative courses approved by your home college in case of a course cancellation or schedule conflict.
We cannot guarantee specific course offerings, because not all courses listed on our website are offered every semester. Local Chilean universities do not confirm their offerings until shortly before the start of the semester. You should not count on taking or fulfilling degree requirements with a particular local university course.
Courses are conducted entirely in Spanish and typically carry 3 credits. Credit allocation noted in each course description is subject to change depending on total number of hours the course meets in a given semester.
The final list of course offerings and the schedule of classes will be available when you arrive in Santiago.
