These FAQs are to be used in conjunction with information in STEPS ONE, TWO, and THREE. They should not be considered a shortcut or a resource to be used instead of thoroughly reviewing all information on this site. Students who carefully prepare for registration by reading through all STEPS, using the Shopping Cart in advance, and registering as soon as their appointment allows will have the best chance of getting into their preferred courses.

You will find your individual registration start time in OrangeAbroad > Registration Appointment and Instructions.
You can also find appointments in MySlice > Enrollment > Enrollment Dates. Florence appointments are on the Flex Long Classes line; November dates are for the initial enrollment period and January dates reflect schedule adjustment periods.
All Florence students’ online registration appointments expire at 3:00 pm Eastern US time on Tuesday, Nov 14.
You should get online to register as soon as possible once your appointment starts. This will give you the best chance of getting your preferred course schedule. If you do not register during the online registration period November 8-14, you may find that your first-choice courses are full when our office emails you during the break between semesters to complete your registration administratively.
Sign in to OrangeAbroad. Your SUID number is located under Applicant Home > Profile Tab (left side).
If you cannot locate it, contact your Florence International Program Advisor at syrflorence@syr.edu. You will need to provide some personal identification information (name, birthdate, SSN) in order for us to release this number to you.
Follow the instructions at the NetID Self-Service portal.
Go to the NetID Self-Service portal.
Our office cannot remove holds. Here’s whom you should contact depending on the type of hold:
Advising holds (matriculated SU students only): Your home school/college
Bursar holds: Bursar’s Office at +1 315-443-2444
Other Financial Holds (Parking, Bookstore, Library, misc.): Office that placed the hold
Review the Enrollment Guide (pages 2-3).
Sign in to OrangeAbroad. You will find your uploaded form under Completed Requirements > Student Advising Form (with Advisor’s Signature).
Yes, as long as you are eligible for it (for example, meet any prerequisite) and if it is not a Special Permission course. Syracuse Abroad recommends you discuss any changes to your approved SAF with your academic advisor(s).
Yes, for all of our Center offerings. However, if you are taking any courses at the University of Florence or studio art courses at Florentine studios, you will need to figure in 20-30 minutes commuting time from the Syracuse Center.
You cannot register for classes when there is a time conflict. You need to be available for the entire meeting time of each class. Select the course you most want to take.
As soon as your appointment allows! The earlier you get online to register, the better your chances of getting into your first-choice courses.
Standard appointments for SU Florence students start at noon Eastern time on Thursday, November 9. Some students, including certain majors and seniors, have an earlier appointment, starting on November 8.
Find your individual registration start time in OrangeAbroad > Registration Appointment and Instructions.
You can also find appointments in MySlice > Enrollment Dates. Florence appointments are on the Flex Long line; November dates are for the initial enrollment period and January dates reflect schedule adjustment periods.
Log in to MySlice > Enrollment > Enroll/Drop/Adjust Classes. You can find detailed instructions on how to register in STEP THREE. Also review the Online Enrollment Guide.
Do not SEARCH for classes! Do not use the PLANNER! These are by far the most common errors made during online registration for Syracuse Abroad classes. Instead, enter the five-digit class number associated with each class in the Schedule of Classes (see next question).
You can find the five-digit class numbers (highlighted in yellow or green) in the first column of the updated Schedule of Classes.
Our office will administratively add the required CAS 200 course after online registration concludes. Some cohorts, including Architecture Program students, Design Program students, and Engineering Program students, are administratively registered for some or all of their courses.
All Florence students must register for at least 13 credits to meet the minimum required by the program and Italian immigration. The following do NOT count toward your 13-credit minimum: main campus and College of Professional Studies online courses and/or any independent study arranged through the main campus.
During the initial registration period, the system will prevent you from registering for more than 17 credits. Please contact the Florence Academic Team if you need to register for more than 17.
On occasion, a course may be cancelled due to insufficient demand. Cancelled courses (and additional sections for some courses in high demand) are listed in STEP ONE: Review Updates.
Check the Schedule of Classes. If the class number is highlighted in green, this is a cross-listed course that can be registered under more than one subject prefix. For such courses, we provide a single class number for each subject listing to prevent you from being closed out of the course under one subject while seats are still available under another. You will be able to correct your registration once you get to Florence so that it reflects the subject prefix you want or need.
Some studio arts courses (generally intermediate and advanced level) meet together in what is known as a "vertical studio." During online registration, we provide a single class number for classes that make up the vertical studio to prevent you from getting closed out of the level you need while seats are still available under another level. You will be able to correct your registration when classes start in Florence so that you are enrolled in the appropriate level based on your transcript or documented past experience.
You do not do this online. This will be worked out in Florence with your professor.
Some classes have seats reserved for specific populations (e.g., Studio Arts or Architecture Program students). If this is the case, although you will see that the class is open, seats are available only to specific populations. If you don’t meet the criteria for enrollment, MySlice will indicate to you that the class is full.
Select an alternative course. Be sure that you are registered for a minimum of 13 credits. This is a requirement of both the program and Italian immigration. You may have another chance to get the preferred class during online schedule adjustment in January.
During online registration for Florence, you are limited to a maximum of 17 credits.
Please note that if you register for any credits over the amount of 19, those credits count toward your total semester credits and are subject to additional per-credit tuition charges. For detailed information, see the latest Tuition, Fees, and Related Policies Bulletin.
If you do not have the background needed for a class (see prerequisites in the course description and on the Schedule of Classes), the system may not allow you to enroll, and you should select another course. Do not contact the instructor to request permission to register during early registration; priority goes to students who meet the prerequisite. If you believe you are adequately prepared for this class, email the Florence Academic Team with documentation supporting your request to take the class in question. After registration concludes, if there are open seats in the course, students without the prerequisite request permission from the Academic Services Team.
If you can’t register for a course that is currently in your Shopping Cart, first try removing it from your cart and then re-add it. If you continue to have problems, review Troubleshooting and this video on Common Enrollment Error Messages. If this doesn’t address your problem, email the Florence Academic Team or Courtney Eppel with the error message you receive and/or a screenshot.
This is not a time conflict (MySlice will not allow you to register for classes that conflict). It is simply a warning that the classes meet one right after another. When both classes meet at the Florence Center, this is fine. You will have enough time to get from one class to the next.
Do NOT email the professor of the class or the SU department! They cannot waive you into a class.
If you are closed out of a course that you believe you must take this semester in order to graduate on time:
First, check with your home college to see if another course will meet the same requirement or if you have any other registration options.
If you have no other options, submit the Academic Need Verification Form. IMPORTANT: This form must be signed by a school official who is familiar with all of your remaining degree requirements. For matriculated SU students, this should be your primary school or college academic advisor.
All students must be registered for at least 13 credits of Florence classes including CAS 200.
Make any changes you want during the registration period. Once the normal registration period ends on Tuesday, November 14 at 3:00 pm Eastern time, you will have to wait until the schedule adjustment period starts in early January to make changes. You will receive more information on the dates and process for schedule adjustment in December.
Our office may remove you from any class for which you are deemed ineligible (don’t meet the prerequisite, registered for more than one FST/NSD class, etc.). Syracuse Abroad makes every attempt to notify students via their syr.edu email before processing an administrative drop, so be sure to regularly read your syr.edu messages!
