I was born in Nyabisawa, a village in Suna-East Constituency, Migori, Kenya. Like any other ordinary boy at his time, I started elementary education in my ancestral village at Nyabisawa Primary School and later moved to Yago Mixed Day Secondary School in Awendo Constituency for O’level. In 2016, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education Science (Physics and Mathematics) from Kibabii University. I later obtained a Master’s degree in Physics Education from Rutgers University, Graduate School of Education, New Jersey, USA, in 2019.
Currently, I am teaching mathematics and pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Syracuse University, New York. My doctoral dissertation focuses on enhancing secondary teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching problem-solving skills through lesson study professional development in schools serving learners from less privileged communities.
In addition to my research, I give educational talks on disrupting the tradition of math phobia and debunking myths related to who can excel in mathematics. My research interests also include motivating learners in math classrooms and engaging in social justice research, such as using math to explore environmental justice issues like lead poisoning in Syracuse City.
I live in Syracuse, New York, with my beautiful wife, Moureen, our two sons, Liam and Lior, and our daughter, Liseli. Before moving to the United States, I taught high school mathematics and physics at various schools in Kenya.
