Students in grades 10–12 who meet the requirements for membership are eligible to be invited for membership in the J.J. Pearce High School Chapter of National Society. Students who meet the scholarship requirement will have an opportunity to complete a form detailing their accomplishments in and commitment to service, leadership, and character. Students must have attended J.J. Pearce High School or another RISD high school during the previous school year. ***
Qualifications for membership is based on the four pillars of NHS:
Scholarship
At a minimum, students at J.J. Pearce High School must have a cumulative GPA of 90% or higher. Students must have attended J.J Pearce High School or another RISD high school during the previous school year. The grades posted in the RISD grade management system (FOCUS) are used to determine the qualifying GPA after summer school grades have posted.
Service
At the time of application, students should have volunteer / service hours recorded in Google Form or prior to May 2024 in x2VOL. Hours can be recorded as soon as June 1 prior to starting their 9th grade year. This involves voluntary service performed by the student for the school or community, done without compensation. A total of 60 volunteer / service hours should be recorded in Google Form or prior to May 2024 in x2VOL by March 30 of student's senior year.
Sophomore Applicants (10th Grade) must have at least 5 hours of volunteer or community service hours recorded and verified in the Google Form or prior to May 2024 in x2VOL.
Junior Applicants (11th Grade) must have at least 15 hours of volunteer or community service hours recorded and verified in the Google Form or prior to May 2024 in x2VOL.
Senior Applicants (12th Grade) must have at least 30 hours of volunteer or community service hours recorded and verified in the Google Form or prior to May 2024 in x2VOL.
Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
Understanding the Obligations of Membership
Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with this honor. For example, there will be chapter meetings. The meeting schedule and member attendance obligations will be posted in the NHS Google Classroom. Members also must participate in chapter and individual service projects to benefit the school and community. Chapter service projects will be posted in the NHS Schoology Classroom.
