Weekly - Counting Collections - Come back to Counting Collections Next Week please! Use your bees and ladybugs you made last week to practice counting, adding and subtracting within 10 this week!

Practice counting objects Monday - Friday. How many objects can your child count accurately without getting mixed up? Find objects in the house in quantities close to that amount. Practice counting these collections daily. As they improve, provide them with slightly larger collections.

Print a set of these for each week. Have your child practice counting objects and recording how many. They should not draw the objects but use circles, tally marks or numbers to represent how many.

Practice by tracing these Monday - Thursday using a different color [ your broken crayons ] each day.

Families, if you are not able to copy and print this, please use a yellow marker or highlighter. Write the numerals 1-10 approximately 3 inches tall and have your child trace them once with blue, once with green, and once with blue markers. If they are still engaged, trace again with orange, then red. This is "rainbow writing"

  • Monday - Measurement: How Tall? - page 46

  • Tuesday - Measurement: How Wide? - page 47

  • Wednesday - Simple Addition up to 5 - page 48

  • Thursday - What is Missing? Set 1 - page 49

  • Friday - What is Missing? Set 2 - page 50

Parents:

  • Listen to the video and pause it at points where it is important to have a discussion - for example when they use different sized crayons to measure or when they don't have the crayons lined up with the end of the book they are measuring.

  • Talk about these problems and how to solve them. It might help to have a book and some broken/non-broken crayons to practice with.

  • Review language taught earlier in the year - long, longer, longest, short, shorter, and shortest.

  • Practice measuring different objects' length using crayons, cubes/Legos, spoons, pencils, popsicle sticks or other non-standard objects. Ask your child to compare length of objects and use the language reviewed above.

  • Complete a counting collection and your worksheet page.

Tuesday - Measurement - Grover Finds the Tallest Monster

Parents:

  • Listen to the video and pause it at points where it is important to have a discussion - to point out the comparative language tall, taller and tallest and review the language from yesterday. Talk about how these words are the same and different. Talk about your height compared to your child's, your spouses.

  • Practice measuring different objects' height using string or yarn. Ask your child to compare length of objects and use the language reviewed above.

  • Complete a counting collection and your worksheet page.

Wednesday Video #1 - Five Fingers in My Pocket Subtraction Fingerplay

Parents:

  • After listening and acting out the fingerplay with your child, practice a few addition and subtraction problems within 5 using your ladybugs and bees from last week!

  • Complete a counting collection and your worksheet page.

Wednesday Video #2- 10 Little Friends Fingerplay - Counting Forwards and Backwards 1-10, 10-1

Parents:

  • Listen to the video all the way through focusing on the words.

  • Listen again, focusing on the finger movements.

  • Practice singing with the video.

  • Practice acting the finger movements out while singing.

Tuesday and Wednesday - 5 Little Ladybugs Fingerplay Subtraction Song with King County Librarian

Parents: Here are is a Fingerplay to practice subtraction.

Five little ladybugs sitting on a flower.

One flew away when it began to shower.

Four little ladybugs crawling on a tree.

One flew away, and that left three.

Three little ladybugs walking on you.

One flew away and that left two.

Two little ladybugs resting in the sun.

One flew away, and that left one.

One little ladybug flew away home,

She didn’t want her children left alone.

Tuesday and Wednesday - Draw 5 Ladybugs - Practice Subtraction

Parents:

  • Follow the guided drawing steps to draw 5 ladybugs large enough for your child to cut them out. Have your child draw one ladybug. It is okay if you draw the rest. Cardstock or construction paper would be ideal. Use a cereal box if you don't have a heavier weight of paper.

  • Color the ladybugs once they are complete. Use ribbon, string, paper, yarn or pipe cleaners/chenille stems for antennae if you want. Have your child cut out one ladybug. It is okay if you cut out the rest.

  • Direct your child to put different quantities of dots on each half of the lady bug. These work GREAT for addition problems! You can use them for addition in the future.

  • Act the story out several times using the finger play, then act it out with the lady bugs.

  • Spend just a few minutes each day this week with these cute ladybugs for short math practice times to practice your own addition [using the dots on the ladybugs] and subtraction [using the 5 ladybugs] problems this week.

Thursday and Friday - Here is the Beehive Fingerplay and Draw 5 Bees

Follow the directions below, then use your Bees and your Ladybugs to count, add and subtract!

Parents:

  • Have your child draw one bee. It is okay if you help with the rest. Follow the guided drawing steps to draw 5 bees large enough for your child to cut them out. Have them cut out one bee. It is okay if you help cut out the rest. Cardstock or construction paper would be ideal. Use a cereal box if you don't have a heavier weight of paper.

  • Direct your child to put different quantities of stripes on each bee. These work GREAT for addition problems! You can use them for addition in the future.

  • Spend just a few minutes each day this week and next with these cute bees for short math practice times to practice your own addition [using the stripes on the bees] and subtraction [using the 5 ladybugs] problems this week.

  • SAVE your bees and ladybugs to count up to 10, add and subtract within 10 for the next few weeks.
