Hello Kindergartners/ almost 1st graders!

We hope you had a week full of adventures while learning about sea life last week!

As we wrap up our year together in Kindergarten we want to praise you for your growth mindset and perseverance the last few months of virtual learning!

As this is the last week of school, it will be filled with end-of-year Kindergarten reflections and celebrations! Let's think about the good times, hard times, times of perseverance, and how you have grown on the inside and outside during Kindergarten! Let's celebrate!

We are thinking about you all and have enjoyed every minute of our time together in the classroom and virtually. Have a great summer in the sun with your family! We hope you have more adventure-filled days. Stay kind.

About Our Kindergarten Site

There are many resources on this site because some students and families want more, but please understand - these are options and we want you to do what works for your family.
Many parents are having to work right now while having in- home learning with their children at different grade-levels.
This can be stressful! We don't want you to feel pressure to get all of this done. Use what you like and leave the rest! Stay healthy and take care of one another.

This is one of our favorite weeks of kindergarten: the week we would normally go on a field trip!

If we were still at school together, we would be spending the week getting ready to go on a fun adventure. We would be learning all about the ocean habitat of Puget Sound, and about the many creatures we might discover while visiting the tidepools at Seahurst Park in Burien.

We are feeling a little bit sad that we can’t actually take a school bus ride and go exploring together, but we’ve decided to take you on a VIRTUAL field trip!

All week, we’ll learn about the amazing animals that live in the sea through lots of fun videos and books. We hope you enjoy our trip, and that you’ll write an All-About book full of the facts you learn. As always, we would love to see what you write! We think you’ll love being a tidepool expert.

This week our theme is Engineering Design. Each of you will become a Scientist for the week, do experiments, and create something of your own design. So stop reading, watch this video clip, get active, and try to guess what you will be designing this week.

Click here: Zumba Kids- I like to move it 2 minutes

Did you watch the video? If not go back and watch it before you continue.

OK now, did you guess what your assignment is this week? That's right, this week you will design and build something that moves.

This week you’re a Design Engineer - you'll develop your ideas by doing experiments, reading, and writing, then you'll create a toy that will move.

This week we suggest that you put your work in a different order:

  1. Do the science experiment.

  2. Read about motion.

  3. Then write a "How to Book" about the toy you plan to build.

Remember designers learn as they go so don't be afraid to add to, or change your ideas along the way.

For the final day of the week we hope you will take a picture of the toy you created or make a short (less than 1 minute) video of it in action and send it to your teacher to share with the class.

*Social/ Emotional lessons will not happen every day, but we encourage you to do Second Step lesson #16 -Managing Anger (found under the Social/Emotional tab) at some point in the week.

This week begins with a holiday on Monday—Memorial Day! We have included a story to read about Memorial Day, but we hope you will enjoy the day off with your family.

Many people say that Memorial Day weekend officially marks the beginning of summer. We can’t believe it! We are still going strong with our learning, and we are so proud of all of you for continuing to do your best even when we aren’t together at school. We miss you and love you!

As the weather gets warmer, there are more and more critters outside! Have you seen bugs? Some people think they’re creepy and some think they are cool—but whatever you think, they are all very interesting! We hope you enjoy some fun learning about insects this week, and we hope you’ll share what you learn with us—we love hearing from you and seeing what you are up to!

Hello Families,

This week your student will learn about gardening. For some, gardening is a hobby, and for others it is a means for growing their own produce. We hope you find these lessons interesting, engaging, and inspired to get outside and plant something with your student.

A gardener gardens his/her garden. What will you grow? Share with us your gardening adventure(s).

*Science and Social/ Emotional lessons will not happen every day, but we encourage you to do Second Step lessons 14 and 15 (found under the Social/Emotional tab) at some point in the week and enjoy extra science videos about frogs available under the science tab.

Dear MHE Kindergarten Families,

Last week you learned the importance of hard work, kindness and sharing with help from The Little Red Hen.

Where do hens live? You guessed it! They live on a farm.

This week we will learn about the job of a farmer, and explore more animals that live on a farm.

As always, we are here to support you. Keep up the good work students and families!

Love,

MHE Kindergarten Team

Dear Maplewood Heights' Kindergartners,

Have you been hearing lots of frog songs in the evenings? That is a sound of spring! This week, we’re going to become frog experts as we read, write, and count with frogs. We miss you and are so proud of the work you are doing to keep learning at home!

*Science and Social/Emotional lessons will not happen every day, but we encourage you to do Second Step lessons 12 and 13 (found under the Social/Emotional tab) at some point in the week and enjoy extra science videos about frogs available under the science tab.

Welcome to the new format for our weekly lessons. We will be posting lessons under each topic broken out into daily activities.
This week’s theme is Imagine That!
For lessons this week we want each student to really crank up their imagination! They can be as practical or as wild as they like when bringing life to each lesson. We hope that you have fun exploring this week’s theme and hope that you will share with us just how Imagine That! came to life in your home.
*Science and Social Emotional lessons will not happen every day – check the pull downs for specific days. Our Ethnic Studies and Additional Resources tabs are available for you to use to extend your family’s learning if you so choose.

Dear Families,
We hope that you are well and staying healthy during this unique time.Spring is here! Something we love about this season is the feeling of a "longer day." It's the time when the sun rises earlier in the morning, and sets later in the day. This week's theme will focus on the sun!As a reminder, these are optional assignments and resources that will not be collected or graded. Each week we will present a new theme that we hope you find exciting and that helps you learn something new!
We hope you enjoy learning all about the sun this week! Please note - we are here to support you, not to pressure you. Your family's health and well-being are our top priority. If you have time, we would love to see your All About the Sun books and/or your drawings of the sun! You can share these by sending your teacher pictures via email if you choose.
