Becoming Avid Readers
Directions:
Watch the video of Mrs. Applebaum introducing what it means to be an avid reader
Practice being an avid reader for 15-20 minutes
Math - Under the Bowl: One Less
Today's Focus: Subtraction is today's focus. This game forces students to think about numbers getting smaller and how they can justify how they know the number has reduced.
Directions
Find a learning friend (family member, stuffed animal, toy, Zoom Friend).

Under the Bowl: One Less
Learning Focus
Taking away 1 from a number to find the difference.
Communicating with friends through spoken language about the number of objects they think is under the bowl and why.
Using spoken language to ask questions to their friend about how many are under the bowl on their turn.

Accommodations:
Lower or raise the number of objects being used for the game.
Use a 100s chart to help yourself count!
Parent Information:
Subtraction is generally more difficult for children to compute. When they learn to count they learn to count forward/up with the numbers increasing (related to addition), but learning to count backwards is generally not practiced until much later (related to subtraction). It is important that students practice counting backwards to help with their conceptualization of subtraction. This activity works on removing an object so students are forced to count backwards.
