In fourth grade, students are expected to practice math facts, read nightly, and have family discussions about learning. This shouldn't take up more than 30 - 45 minutes! Check out the topics below for options.
Lots of parents wonder why we don't have more homework. There is a lot of research that has changed our minds about traditional homework; if you're interested in reading about it yourself, Bryn Mawr has a statement here.
At least 20 minutes
This can be a book, story, magazine article, etc. Either way, it should be something your student is interested in! If they are regularly reading far below or above their ability, talk to me about next steps, but otherwise any reading is good reading.
At least 10 minutes
This can be a quick game, one run-through of flip cards, etc. Usually in 4th grade students are focused on their multiplication facts, but think about your child's needs-- addition fact practice is often a good focus as well! Below are some options that might work for your child, but anything to review facts or practice work is great.
Fit to your routine
Fit this to whenever your family tends to have time to talk. For some families, this might work well at dinner, or during a drive home. In my family, this is usually before our nightly reading time. Either way, whenever you are already together as a family, chat with your student about something they learned. It isn't meant to be a research project or essay! It's just a topic to chat about during a regular time that works for you.
