Reading

Families: Here is an outline to help you schedule Reading this week. Each activity is intended to take 20 minutes.

Please feel free to adjust according to your routines and schedules.

Materials needed:

Fairy tale (book OR access a fairy tale on MYON)

Reading notebook OR paper to take notes

Here is how to access Myon if you need:

Students:

  • Watch the read aloud of 'Sleeping Beauty' so that your are familiar with the story used in the lessons.

  • Choose a FAIRY TALE book and follow the instructions in the daily videos below.

  • Don't forget to share a picture or video of you reading to family member or your stuffed animal!


Families:

Check in with your student about the FAIRY TALE they are reading. You can ask questions like:

    • Who is the main character in your book?

    • What is your main character like?

    • Who are the secondary (other) characters in your book?

    • Why are the secondary (other) characters important to your main character?

    • What is the problem in the story?

    • What's the solution to the problem in the story?

    • Is there a life lesson (something the author wants you to learn) in the story?

    • Why do you think the author chose to use the type of magic (fairies, talking animals, magical powers) that they did? Would the story be different if they had used a different type of magic?

    • What is your character motivated by?

    • What is your character's perspective?

  • Practice reading your fairy tale thru one time, using strategies to help have a storyteller's voice. (Use the charts from last week to help you!)

  • REREAD your fairy tale a second time in your storyteller's voice. Record yourself reading your fairy tale and send it to your teacher on Seesaw or Class Dojo!

This week you will explore writing a new genre called 'FAIRY TALES'. It's a type my narrative writing. You will choose a fairy tale and adapt it to make it your own version!
