Representations
Representations
This part of the course elevates your existing knowledge of language to linguistic level. You'll build up a repertoire of linguistic understanding and apply it to texts in order to discuss not only what language has been used, but how it has been used to represent things, places, people, times, concepts, ideologies, opinions etc.
Your comparative skills will also be needed as you'll compare how language used to represent certain things differs depending on the time the text was produced.
The two advertisements have the same purpose - advertising - but are separated by 100 years. Note five ways the advertisers have used language in different ways reflecting their different contexts.
