It's about supporting learners in the digital age. The LwICT Continuum can assist teachers and students with assessing thinking skills during inquiry-based learning—whether digital tools are present or not.
June 22, 2018: Engaging our students with problems they enjoy solving leads to heightened engagement, which can then be utilized for learning in any area. Seymour Papert, the South African mathematician and educator, envisioned the role of computing in schools as an avenue for students to actively construct their own knowledge by creating and solving challenges. He was prophetic! That's what's happening
today, as students use a variety of easy-to-use coding tools, like Scratch, Playgrounds, and various robots.
We have placed Blue-bots and Spheros in each PRSD school this spring so that teachers can begin to explore some strategies for engaging students with coding. There are also 3 Dash robots available upon request. And, a first in PRSD, Elm Creek students are reflecting on their experiences coding for drone flights!
Gr. 6 students at Elm Creek 'volunteered' to take part in an enrichment activity, learning how to code drones. Here's a video from their presentation on June 22nd. See more here.
Dash is a programmable robot on wheels with several lights, buttons, a speaker and microphone — all controllable via coding apps on our iPads. Like the other robots, it operates without the need for WiFi or internet access.
