Who should apply?
This opportunity is open to full-time postgraduate students (Honours, Master’s, or PhD) at NWU (Potchefstroom campus) from tourism, IT, geography, engineering, and marketing.
What is expected from selected students?
Students will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop an innovative tourism solution. This includes attending regular meetings, contributing to a prototype, business case, and pitch, and participating in the Student-Led Tourism Innovation Summit in October 2026.
How much time will this require?
The initiative runs from May to October 2026 and requires consistent engagement, including in-person on-campus sessions and independent team contributions. Probably around 3-4 hours per week.
Do I need prior experience in innovation or product development?
No. While relevant experience is beneficial, it is not required. More important are:
A willingness to learn
Curiosity, critical and creative thinking
Commitment to teamwork
Why should I apply?
This initiative allows you to:
Gain hands-on experience in developing real-world solutions
Build your academic and professional profile
Develop skills in innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving
Engage with emerging trends shaping the future of tourism and digital experiences
I am not sure if I am “good enough” to apply. Should I still apply?
Yes. Students from diverse backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply. Selection focuses on potential, motivation, and commitment, not only prior achievement.
What do I gain from participating?
You will gain exposure to a national platform, work alongside academics and peers from different disciplines, and contribute to an initiative that may have real-world relevance and impact. The seminar is hosted by Tswane University of Technology in collaboration with the Department of Tourism.
