What is TAG & TALL
TAG & TALL is a mandatory academic literacy proficiency test. The abbreviations refer to:
· TALL – Test of Academic Literacy Levels – the proficiency test written by ALL students who choose to complete the English Academic Literacy Module.
Who should write TAG & TALL
ALL new NWU students may write TAG & TALL. If you do not write TAG & TALL, you will be required to complete the ALDE(A)111 module. However, if your Faculty allows, you may be exempted from ALDE(A)111 based on your TAG & TALL results.
My lecturer (or another student) said I do not need to complete ALDE(A)111.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM! ALL students need to complete ALDE(A)122. ALDE(A)111 is a prerequisite for ALDE(A)122. If you do not complete ALDE(A)111 you will not be able to complete ALDE(A)122, and subsequently you won't be able to graduate.
How does the TAG & TALL results work
After completing the placement tests you will receive your results in the form of a code. This code will indicate whether or not you need to complete ALDE(A)111, or not. Each faculty has a set of rules regarding the ALDE(A)111 modules.

When can I write the TAG & TALL?
ALL new NWU students will have the opportunity to write TAG or TALL from 29 January 2025 at 08:00 until 11 February 2025 at 23:55 on their TAG/TALL eFundi site. The proficiency test serves as a guideline to determine the type of academic literacy support that students need. The results of this test may show that you are not an “at risk student' in terms of academic literacy, and depending on the faculty you are registered in, the test could serve to exempt you from ALDE 111 (or ALDA 111). The results of the test will be communicated to you via eFundi as soon as possible after the final submission date.
What happens after I have completed TAG/TALL?
After completing TAG/TALL, depending on the faculty in which you are registered, the test could serve to exempt you from ALDE/A 111.
Can I study for the test?
No, a student cannot study for the test, as it is not based on theoretical knowledge.
What should I know before writing TAG/TALL 2024?
TAG/TALL 2025 will be written online; therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure that your Internet connection is stable before starting with TAG/TALL on the TAG/TALL eFundi site.
Please note that you have a single opportunity to complete the TAG/TALL, and if (for any reason) you lose connectivity while writing the TAG/TALL, you will NOT receive an additional opportunity to complete the test. The grade you receive for your placement test is final.
Your grade for TAG/TALL 2025 will NOT reflect in your Gradebook. The TAG/TALL results will be sent to you as soon as possible after the final submission date.
I obtained distinctions in school, why is this module necessary for me?
There is no correlation between the results of the TALL and your matric results in language (or other) subjects. The test of academic literacy tests whether a student can cope with the language requirements of an academic context. Language subjects at school have the sole objective of developing language proficiency.
I have already completed the TALL / academic literacy module elsewhere; what should I do?
You have to submit proof thereof to the Academic Literacy admin office. They will provide you with a letter that will state that you do not have to write the test or register for ALDE111.
May I write the TALL more than once?
No, the TALL can only be written once by a student who is a first-year for the first time this year.
