Developing as a Professional Educator

It's not easy learning something new, especially after 50! I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher, but I had resolved that I could just be a teacher to my own children and coach gymnastics on the side. However, six years ago I changed my mind. I went back to school, got my bachelor's degree from Azusa Pacific University in education. I was so proud to walk across the stage- never letting go of a dream. After that I attended the University of Southern California for my masters and credentialing program. I am ever grateful for the cutting-edge classes and training I have received. I felt ready to take on the world or maybe just a classroom.
My first year as a first grade teacher was an eye-opening experience! We came in to school with masks and a lot of rules in order to teach in person. But, we were glad to be there. For me, I had one of the toughest students that could be imagined. He pushed me to my limits everyday. He demanded of me every bit of tolerance, kindness, and acceptance that I could give. Most days I was on the brink and wondered if I was really cut out to be a teacher. Somewhere in the middle of that year, I began to feel more empowered and found my footing. It was a long, hard year, but I am a survivor! What I couldn't have predicted was how that experience would set me up to be successful in my second year.
My second year has been so different. After the previous year, I REALLY felt as though I can do anything! I understand my role as a teacher much better...student relationships come first. Classroom management has been less challenging. I have learned how to be that compassionate authority that leads with love and high-expectations. I have been able to try new curriculum and organize lessons with greater depth and complexity. Much of my success comes from the wonderful educators around me- my first grade team, my induction coach, and the numerous others who still see education as a worthwhile adventure.
I have to say that I truly believe I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I LOVE what I do! Every day brings new challenges and I love it! I look forward to growing in my profession.
