The "Unity in diversity" slogan substantiates the character and origin of the Department of Biological Sciences. The demand for employing faculty members dealing with biology began in July 1969 when MSU-IIT was authorized to offer courses and wherein the General Education Curriculum includes the subject, Natural Science 1, which essentially covers biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy. The creation of the School of Arts and Sciences (in 1976) and its reorganization into the School of Science and Mathematics (in 1978) have led to the offering of the courses: Biology, Botany, Marine Biology, and Zoology.
Formally created in 1980 under the School of Science and Mathematics (SSM), the Biology Department began its operation and was able to produce the first batch of BS Biology and BS Zoology graduates in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Contributing to a broad range of academic areas, the biology department supported the reorganization of SSM into the College of Science and Mathematics in 1984 and also produced the first batch of BS Botany graduates in the same year. The name Bio Department was then changed to the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) in 1985, and the DBS continued to diversify and widen its program/course offerings thenceforth.
In 1997, the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) awarded the Department of Biological Sciences the status of Center of Excellence (COE). At present, the department offers a Bachelor of Science in Biology with the following tracks: Animal Biology, Biodiversity, Microbiology, and Plant Biology. While, the graduate programs include Master of Biology, Master of Science major in Biology, Master of Science in Environmental Science, Doctor of Philosophy in Biology, and Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science.
To become an internationally recognized national center for scholarship, education, and research in the Biological Science in general; in biodiversity and biotechnology in particular, able to sustain the vision and mission of MSU-IIT in the development of the Southern Philippines.
A model Center of Excellence internationally recognized in Biological Science Education, Biological Science Research, and Development in the country.
The Department of Biological Sciences' main objective is to produce high-quality graduates by offering specialization fields in general biology, botany, zoology, and marine biology as well as continuing studies.
To recruit, retain, and support quality faculty, staff, and students who are able to provide highly competent manpower in academe, industry, health, and other sectors of the society wherever their specific expertise in needed.
To provide quality, theoretical, and practical training in the biological sciences based on international standards with particular regard to their application in pertinent community and region-wide problems and needs through relevant world-class curricula, state-of-the-art teaching, research facilities, and linkages.
To engage in high-end basic and applied biological research with emphasis on novel and/or highly relevant problems targeted to spur economic activity and development in the Southern Philippines by attracting investors for commercialization of results or gathered products.
