The Arctic is Alaska's least populated region, with under 10,000 people. The largest town is Utqiagvik (formerly known as Barrow), where half of the region's population lives. After Utqiagvik, Point Hope is the second largest town, with approximately 700 people. Prudhoe Bay, while not technically a town since it has no permanent residents, is the center of the North Slope oil industry and where thousands of transient workers live while working their shifts.
Utqiagvik is located on Point Barrow, the most northern piece of land in the U.S. and the 11th northernmost community in the world.
