The Inupiaq, Yupik, and Alutiiq were all part of the third and final prehistoric migration to Alaska. Their ancestors moved into Alaska 5,000 to 8,000 years ago and spread along the Arctic and North Pacific coast, settling the Alaska coastline from Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound in southern Alaska all the way to the Arctic Ocean.
While the land of these coasts was often barren and the climate one of the most extreme on Earth, the oceans around them were rich in marine life. With a highly developed technology focused on surviving the harsh Arctic climate and living off these abundant oceans, these peoples were able to thrive in areas that earlier groups couldn't.
