The SJI comprehensive school counseling program supports growth in the following areas: academic, career, and personal/social development. Our school counselors serve all students and provide:
Classroom lessons
Small group counseling
Individual counseling
Classroom lessons are aligned with the SC Guidance and Counseling Model (under revision), the ASCA National Model standards, and the CASEL Core Competencies. Some required lessons that are covered every year are related to academic and career planning, bullying prevention, and Erin's Law. Students also received additional instruction based on need and data.
Small group counseling are held during non-instructional time with about 3-6 students for 6-8 weeks. Students are invited to join group based on need. Group counseling allows us to deliver services to multiple students with common concerns all at once. It also gives group members the opportunity to learn from each other.
Individual counseling is solution-focused and short-term in nature. Individual counseling addresses issues that impact school success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools.
