Welcome to Web and Digital Communications with a concentration in Digital Arts. My name is Ms. Etherson and I will be your teacher this year. This is definitely the most complicated start of school that I have ever experienced, but please be assured I have worked hard to ensure that no matter what the situation is with Covid 19, we will still be able to participate and learn as if it was a regular school year. Because this year is not traditional, I have taken this opportunity to make my syllabus electronic. This will guarantee less paper waste and you will always have access to the document and it won't get lost.

This is my 26th year teaching visual and digital art. I have refined this course of mastery based on student interests. This year will will study image editing, digital art and design, yearbook, and the foundations of web design.

The web and digital communication pathway include workers involved in the creating, designing and producing of interactive multimedia products and services, including the development of digitally-generated or computer-enhanced media used in business, training, entertainment, communications, marketing, and fine art. The Web and Digital Communications major is designed for students with a desire to pursue careers such as Photographer and Photo Editor, Graphic Artist, Web Page Developer, Webmaster, Illustrator, 2D Animator, 3D Animator, and Multimedia Specialist or Fine Artist. Students will gain knowledge through Adobe Creative Cloud software such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Dimension, Aero InDesign, and Illustrator. Students will have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national projects and contests as well as local shadowing and internship experiences.Students will offered the opportunity, as part of the program to get industry standard certifications:


The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) which amended the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV) and was signed into law on July 31, 2018, envisions that all students will achieve challenging academic and technical standards and be prepared for high-skill, high-wage, or high-demand occupations in current or emerging professions. The Act also provides an increased focus on the academic achievement of CTE students, an emphasis on improving State and local accountability, and strengthens the connections between secondary and postsecondary education. Technical skills assessments are tools that can be used to improve State and local accountability and strengthen the connections between secondary and postsecondary education, and prepare students to enter the workplace by demonstrating career readiness. The Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE) supports the use of valid and reliable technical skill assessments. Significant effort and funding have been focused on increasing the number of students taking approved assessments and in identifying providers of technical skill assessments that can deliver reliable and usable data.

Through an articulation agreement with Horry Georgetown Technical College, students have the opportunity to earn credit hours toward a Digital Arts degree.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The ever changing and global technological advancements offer newer and broader opportunities in the creative industry. The Digital Art and Design program prepares students for a multitude of careers in the graphic design field. This program provides instruction in layout, computer design, electronic art, color enhancement, and digital photography. Students use design concepts, principles, and processes that meet client expectations using Adobe Creative Suite Software: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Students will have the opportunity to attain Adobe Certified Associate certification. Career development and employability skills are the foundation of all career and technology education. Students will compile their works for inclusion in a portfolio, for use in this program of study, the workforce, or postsecondary education.

Students will be working on industry standard certifications, the yearbook, and their senior mastery research.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This advanced course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue careers in web design and development. Students will develop an in-depth understanding and use of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, layout techniques, and other industry-standard practices. In addition, students will learn scripting technologies to create dynamic and interactive websites. Students will maintain a professional quality portfolio of web design work. Successful completion of this course will prepare students for industry certification.

The Career and Technology Education (CATE) standards are designed to prepare South Carolina learners to meet new challenges in college and career readiness through contextual knowledge, training, and life and career skills that will create a better-prepared workforce for tomorrow. The Web and Digital Communications standards clarify and define a progression of learning in user-friendly language that learners can easily interpret. The standards documents help motivate learning by showing how to set achievable goals, self-assess, and chart progress. Learners take ownership of their individual digital art development.

The standards are designed to prepare South Carolina learners to meet new challenges in college and career readiness through contextual knowledge, training, and life and career skills that will create a better-prepared workforce for tomorrow.



Skillshare

To enhance and enrich our program this year I have arranged for all of you to have a subscription to Skillshare. Not only will we use this for direct instruction of specific software, but we will also use it for working independently on projects of our choosing. For instance, if we are working in Adobe Lightroom in class you have have the opportunity to work on Adobe Dimension with skilled instruction from a professional in the 3D illustration industry. Students will begin researching topics for the mastery presentation which will be the culminating project as part of the major. This project will include an academic research paper and a collection of 24 different digital assets.

Horry County School Resource Link

For the 2020-21 school year, HCS will utilize one of three methods of instructional delivery, as shown in the chart below. Starting on September 8th, the method of instructional delivery will be based upon the county’s level of disease spread activity which is determined by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (SCDHEC) weekly Disease Activity Guidance Report.

The method of delivery will transition from one to the other as the level of disease spread changes.

•If disease activity is determined by SCDHEC to be medium spread or high spread for Horry County, traditional five days per week, face-to-face instruction may not be available for a period of time.

•In the medium spread condition, HCS will implement a hybrid model which supports a return to face-to-face instruction combined with distance learning. ° Students will be placed into one of two groups: Group A or Group B. By dividing students into two groups, fewer students will attend school on a given day, and social distancing can be better achieved in the classroom and throughout the school. ° Distance learning will be different from eLearning that was implemented in the spring and will reflect all that district and school staff members have learned to improve student attendance, engagement, expectations, and outcomes.

•In the high spread condition, HCS will implement full-time distance learning.

Classroom Rules and Procedures


  • •Teachers should organize classroom entrance and exit traffic flow to minimize face-to-face contact for students.

  • •All students and desks will be six feet apart, if feasible, and facing in the same direction.

  • •Students will be asked to bring only essential items (device, homework, etc.) into the schools. If students must bring a bag, a clear one is recommended.

  • •You will be assigned a computer to use each day. You will use the same computer

  • •Classroom activities will include age-appropriate activities that encourage sound personal hygiene practices.

  • •Teachers should develop a plan for wiping desks between class(es).

  • •Teachers should develop a plan to reduce the sharing of materials and supplies.

  • •Parent-teacher conferences must be held in a virtual meeting or by telephone.

  • Masks will be worn at all times-except to eat lunch

GRADING POLICIES

You are responsible for maintaining your own grades/averages. These grades can be accessed online through the Power Schools program. Most assignments will be turned in electronically through Google Classroom.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Cheating and plagiarizing another’s work is a serious offense and will be dealt with accordingly. Cheating is detailed in the AAST Student Handbook. Cheating or plagiarism will result in the student’s receiving a “0” on the assignment in question. Parents and administration will be contacted.

Homework

Homework will not be excessive in this class and will typically be posted in Google Classroom.

Late Work: If work is turned in late a zero will be placed in the grade book until work is submitted. Deduction of 10% each day for any late assignment, after 7 days students will receive a zero.

Make-up Assignments

The student is responsible for making up all work that was missed while he/she was absent. Assignments are due within the same time frame as the original assignment, unless multiple days have been missed, in which case the student should discuss a time frame for make-up assignments.

  • If you are absent because of a school field trip, you are responsible for obtaining all work before the trip and returning to class with the assignment complete. Failure to do so will result in the student earning only partial credit on the late assignment.

  • If you are present when an activity is assigned and are then absent on the due date, the assignment is still due on the day the student returns to school, before class.

  • Discussions about assignments from absent periods will not be discussed during class time. Please arrange to see the instructor at another time, (After School Office Hours).

Google Classroom

Classroom.google.com is an online communication resource that will be used extensively and every in class. It is expected that students will login to the site daily to check for assignments and other important class information.

Final Exam

Students will have a final exam in each class, which is usually project based, and will include your electronic portfolio. Remember, this grade is worth 20% of your final grade.
