Brief History
The structure pictured is known as the Green Hill Park Shelter and was built in 1910. It is a picnic shelter where visitors of the park go to enjoy a meal after spending much of the day in the blazing sun. It is located between the southeastern part of Green Hill Pond and the main road that goes around the park, the Green Hill Parkway. The more than 500-acre park was once farmland, a country estate owned by the Green Family and now is a public park filled with various areas such as sports fields, a golf course, a farm and playgrounds. In 2021, Skyline Drive, a road part of Green Hill Parkway, was renamed Officer Manny Familia Way to honor the life of Officer Familia who passed in the park after attempting to save a child in June of that year.
Architecture
It was built in 1910 by Worcester native and architect George H. Clemence. He was a student of the famous Stephen C. Earle who was known for designing notable structures and buildings such as Bancroft Tower, the Worcester Art Museum and Boynton Hall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Clemence was invited to create the shelter as part of a larger goal of the city to convert the once privately owned estate into a fully functional, public park. Although it does not fall into a definite style, it is often considered Oriental because of the flared edges on the roof. Some if the defining features of the structure are the sixteen fieldstone piers and the "projecting louvered dormers" on the roof.
