Brief History
Originally known as the Centrum, the DCU center was originally built in 1982 and had a capacity of around 12,000 people. The first act of the center, Frank Sinatra, performed on the second of September of that year. It was the home of the New England Concert scene for many years as many people came from Connecticut and Boston to see acts. The arena was expanded to its current capacity of 14,800 people in 1989. It was renamed to the Worcester's Centrum Centre in 1997 following the addition of a convention centre. The Digital Federal Credit Union signed a 10 year naming rights contract to the facility in 2004 thus changing its name to the DCU Center. In 2015, the contract was renewed for another 10 years. The DCU center is a beloved arena and convention center in the Worcester area where expos, shows, commencements, festivals, showcases and, of course, concerts are held. Some of the most recent, notable performances in the arena are Tyler the Creator, Michael Bublé, Green Day, Coolio, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Kevin Hart, Ariana Grande, Paramore and many more. Glazy Susan, a specialty doughnut shop, and a mural done by resident artist, Christian, call the DCU Center home as well. Currently, the Worcester Railers of the American Hockey League play at the stadium regularly.
Architecture
I could not find much about the architecture of the center but a fun fact is that it was built where one of the locations for the Washburn and Moen Wire Works Manufacturing Company (now apart of American Steel and Wire) had a central facility (known as Central Works). The center was built as part of the revitalization of the area to be more modern thus it is sleek and was unlike any of the surrounding buildings. Some of the older, industrial buildings still remain in the area.
