For this project I wanted to continue with the ideas that began to arise in my 20 works collection. The idea was to make three gestural watercolor paintings, that based on the way the paint bled and dried would determine the final image I would draw in between the expressive brush marks.
The Process
I panted with the paper hung up on the walls. This choice not only allowed for me to make more expressive and deliberate brush marks, but also allowed for more uncontrollable elements, such as gravity to decide how the paint dripped.
After painting the three piece I then took pictures of each paper and made a couple of digital sketches while waiting for the paper to dry fully before making the final drawings with pen.
Final Product
Once the paints were dry and I had rough sketches planed for the drawings on each painting, I used a range of fine point pens to create value in shading as seen in the first two works. As for my third work I utilized the fine point pens to create small detail patterns to mimic the bark on a tree. I really enjoyed the process of pulling these images out from what I saw within the original paintings.
