When I began this Project I did not know where to begin so I worked to create pieces based on the mediums I had around me and let my materials chose what image came about for each piece.
I started off by making two digital drawings. One is a portrait of a friend of mine with a green frame around it with the words “GI Joe Royston.” In this piece, I was testing out ideas and trying out different materials, like using my iPad and ProCreate to craft the digital image. I chose to create this image of my friend because his name is Joe and I thought it was clever to say “GI Joe.”
The next piece I created was also a piece of digital art as I tested my ability with the digital materials I had at my disposal. Aesthetically, I found it pleasing to look at while still having a non-realistic aspect because the flower is floating as it has no stem.
After creating two digital projects, I wanted to move back to creating works in a more traditional sense. So, I went sharpie to paper, began creating pieces, and then wanted to add more depth to pieces and added watercolor. After that, I next wanted to push myself and began first with the watercolor and then added the images around the color. So, I was painting pieces of paper with watercolor before I had an idea of the image I was going to create. I let the watercolor inspire what I then drew with a fine point sharpie.
In all of these works, I was playing with space and how space interacts with these things. I played with the space between the background, the shape, and how space shapes around the piece being depicted.
