For my past art projects, I have made stuff that includes cliche imagery, such as lighthouses, beach scenes, and sports. I have also been told that my artwork doesn't provide insight about me, so I decided to use myself to explain my message in my art piece. All my friends, family, and teammates know how obsessed I am with diet sodas, specifically Diet Coke. I even go so far as to have a ranking of Diet Coke containers (bottle, fountain, etc...) in my notes that I have very strong feelings about. So I decided to make fun of myself pop-art-inspiredly and portray myself crying because a restaurant is out of Diet Coke. In the past, I have always worked with paper that was 11" x 14", so not only was the obstruction of working with 24" x 36" challenging, but also finding a way to incorporate three mediums without one being paper was even harder. I chose to work with painting for the portrait, collage with plastic for the background, and draw with a sharpie for the text.  Working on a larger scale made it easier to be more detailed in the painting since it didn't just look like a blob of color but made collaging with bottle wrappers hard because I needed so many. Using split complementary colors that worked well was another challenge because I tried using the Diet Coke red (#7cf700), but bright blue and green are its split complementary colors, and I wouldn't be able to paint match it accurately. My goal was to paint the red in the Diet Coke labels orange, blue, and purple, but it took away the sheen from the labels, and I didn't like how it looked. At first, I planned on having a speech bubble with my picture saying, "What do you mean they're out of Diet Coke?" but I didn't like the way it looked when I planned it out, so I just drew different fonts for each letter to give it that scrapbook font feel. I am very happy with how my project turned out. I thought it would be way worse, and I want to explore more fun/abstract art like this again.
