Mountain Avenue Complete Streets Project

How CAN we have a safer street for 2,000 school children?

The redesign of Mountain Ave from Bonita to Base Line is the #1 priority for CSP.

October UPDATE: The 30% draft design was presented along with responses to public comments at the October 26 Traffic & Transportation Commission meeting. Despite all the public comments requesting safer infrastructure, protected bike lanes, and slower traffic, the same status quo dangerous cross section design was sadly presented as the recommended design.

The present 30% design can be found in the TTC document here and the TTC presentation here

Here's the city's proposed 30% design cross section

Notice the dangerous painted bike lanes sandwiched between moving & parked cars!

This area is known as the "Door Zone." It's very dangerous & even deadly - Watch the "dooring" video below

In fact a 4-year old girl was killed earlier this year in Oakland, CA after being doored on a road with the exact same configuration <-click to see - as the design for Mountain Ave

Here's the CSP recommended design that is most similar to "Alternative B"

Noticed the protected bike lane that is separated by a physical barrier & parked cars

Where would you feel safer having your kids ride to school??? Or even riding yourself?

This "Cross Section" design does NOT address pedestrian crossing, traffic calming and other features that members of CSP have been asking the city to also consider to make Mountain Ave safer. CSP continues to push for better PEDESTRIAN infrastructure too!!!

CSP member Phil Ebiner made a short video about the challenges trying to bike with his family while crossing Mountain Ave in the morning

Children deserve to have access to and be safe on Claremont's streets outside of a vehicle. Walking & Biking to school is one of many ways children can gain more independence and confidence in their lives, while also fostering a sense of community & connection. That doesn't happen in the backseat of an SUV.
