Welcome to the Seahurst School Counseling web page! These pages were created as a resource to help you to get to know your School counselors, Ms. Zike & Ms. Martina, and the supports and services we provide. Check out the tabs at the top of the page to find great information on a variety of community resources, as well as pages designed just for parents and students!
Some services your school counselors provide are:
Parent conferencing - Families are experiencing greater levels of stress than ever before. Do you or your student need someone to talk to? We can conference in person, by phone or Zoom about how your student is adjusting to school and home life and discuss resources and helpful strategies. Together we can problem-solve and explore ways to manage any big feelings that are coming up whether your student is managing feelings of worry, anger, grief or loneliness.
Student Visits - Seahurst students are invited to drop a note in the white mailbox outside the counseling office to let us know they'd like to meet (don't forget to put up the red flag so I know I have mail!) For students attending virtually, sending an email or meeting in a break out room are great options. There are many reasons students wish to speak to their school counselor. Often they are looking for support with things such as: making and keeping good friends, coping with strong emotions, maintaining focus and persistence in their learning, dealing with conflict and solving problems, or coping with emotions that come with family transitions such as move, divorce, or loss of a loved-one. Virtual students are invited to email their school counselors to set up a private visit in their class break-out room.
Small Groups- Seahurst offers small groups for students with a focus on social-emotional learning and support. Groups focus on a variety of topics and skill building such as managing strong emotions, friendship / social skills, or coping with grief, separation and divorce to name a few.
Check In Check Out- This program is dear to my heart! It is a short term (about 8 weeks) intensive support to students who we believe would benefit from greater adult connection and attention while working to meet goals around positive student engagement. In this program I meet with your student for a breakfast "check in" and again at the end of the day as we "check out" and reflect on the day. We set and monitor goals in being safe, respectful and responsible Seahurst Stars. Parents receive daily feedback on their student's progress to increase school/home partnership, and students strive to earn weekly incentives for their hard work!
Recommended Home Activities -We will post information for both parents and students here on the counseling web page that challenge us to keep growing social-emotional skills, such as positive communication, problem-solving, and managing strong feelings. It may be a short video, story, or family activity. Check it out and come back often, We will keep adding things to it. Reach out and let us know if there are certain topics you are interested in learning about.
Accessing Community Resources - In addition to the resources listed under the Community Resources tab, we can help connect students in financial need to resources such as school supplies, including backpacks, and can often help with shoes, a warm coat and gently-used clothing. Additionally, if your family is living with food insecurity we can send students home with weekend meals thanks to our non-profit partner, The Backpack Brigade. Just reach out to your school counselor to get signed up.
