An aural understanding of music is essential for music literacy (reading/writing). When you were a child, books were read to you before you learned how to read (understand letters, or symbols, that make up words). Even before this, you learned to speak before reading and in order for you to learn how to speak, you had to hear the words. The same is true for music.
In AP Music Theory, you will develop your aural understanding of music by first, learning scales. You will begin with the do hexachord and its intervals before moving on to the major scale and its intervals. Then you will aurally learn triads (three note chords) and their inversions before moving on to specific sounds of a sequence of pitches (UIL Aural Skills).
Please read each of the following below and learn in order of what you do not already know or wish to review. You will then have the opportunity to create a video of you performing these skill sets.
This six note scale and intervals are the first things learned by every student in the Hawk Choir Program. You will be expected to sing this scale and all of its intervals using solfege and curwen hand signs. You must demonstrate this skill set by September 2, 2023. You will create a video in which you demonstrate this skill set and turn it in per the instructions below.

Triads and their qualities/inversions
A triad is a chord consisting of three pitches. There are three qualities of triads every AP Music Theory Student will be expected to know: major, minor, diminished, and augmented. Once you have demonstrated mastery of the scales/intervals, we will sing triads and eventually seventh chords, using solfege and curwen hand signs, in various inversions and progressions. Assessments will either be in class or by means of creating a video (instructions are below).
Creating a video
After spending time with the slides provided, students who wish to check off their proficiency may do so by creating a video in which they
Sing the Skill Set using solfege and curwen hand-signs in the correct placements as they sing
Students must be visible and heard in the video
Please dress appropriately (as you would for school)
Please have something behind you like a wall
Please be standing or sitting at a table or desk but not on the floor or in your bed.
Once your video is created, please label it like so:
FIRST NAME_LAST NAME_NAME OF SKILL SET
EX. Tony_Stark_do hexachord
Once you have labeled your video, place it in the correct folder found in the 24-25 AP MUSIC THEORY STUDENTS FOLDER.
You must use your HHS google email account to access this folder!
