Charles Manuel Flores, Jr. is in his fifteenth year as the Choir Director/AP Music Theory Instructor at Jack C. Hays High School. Mr. Flores served as Hays CISD Secondary Choral Team Lead for fourteen years. Before coming to Hays HS, Mr. Flores served for six years as Director of Vocal Music at John Jay High School, in Northside ISD, where he re-built the choral program, started the AP Music Theory Class, and served as Fine Arts Department Chair.
Choirs under Mr. Flores’ direction have consistently earned Superior and Sweepstakes ratings at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading, and Superior and Best in Class ratings at choral festivals throughout the state of Texas, including Superior and 2nd Runner Up (Small Ensemble Division) ratings at the American Classics Madrigal Festival. Choirs from the HHS Choir Program, have been featured with the Wimberley Community Chorus and UTSA Concert Choir.
Students of Mr. Flores have consistently achieved membership in the TMEA Region and All-State Choirs. They have been successful at UIL Solo and Ensemble and Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competitions, with students earning Outstanding Performer.
Mr. Flores has served as the Artistic Director of the Wimberley Community Chorus. While in San Antonio, Mr. Flores served as chorister, soloist, board member, student conductor and assistant director with the San Antonio Choral Society. Mr. Flores has performed with the San Antonio Mastersingers and the San Antonio Chamber Choir. He has served as a paid singer or choir director in churches throughout Central Texas.
Mr. Flores’ academic accomplishments include the American Musicological Society’s Minority Travel Fellowship, featured student director at the Texas Choral Directors Association’s 2003 Conference, and the 2003 recipient of the Texas Choral Directors Association Past Presidential Scholarship. He received the degree of Bachelor of Music (cum laude) with a major in Music Studies (All-Level Choral) from the University of Texas at San Antonio, studying voice under Dr. Gary Mabry. Mr. Flores also earned the Master of Music: Conducting, from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he studied choral conducting under Dr. John Silantien.
In 2015, Mr. Flores earned his Certificate as a Kodály Specialist at Texas State University, where he studied under Dr. Michael Houlahan and Dr. Philip Tacka.
Mr. Flores is a member of TMEA, TCDA, and TMAA. He is sought after as a choral adjudicator and clinician.
