Instructions:
As an educator or group of educators, you will need to do a few things in advance of this project to ensure students have ample time to prepare, play, and write.
Please ensure that students have had ELA class time to form their survivor groups and complete their character creation process. There are materials provided on the Survivor Creation page to aid in this process. Below is a link to examples of lessons for this purpose.
Please ensure that students have had Mathematics class time to calculate the probability distributions for each of the events for the game as described on the Event Sheet. This should include the compound and dependent events for Precalculus standards. If this project is being condensed for Geometry probability standards, perhaps these more complex probabilities can be provided after the simple independent events are calculated by students. Below is a link to examples of lessons for this purpose.
Please print all necessary PDFs, along with extra copies of the event and travel sheets, as the students will need a varying amount to complete the game.
Teachers should make arrangements for dedicated time to "play" the game. This could look like an extended class period or an in-school field trip to a separate location. The game will require at least 60 minutes to play properly.
After the game is done, ELA teachers can move forward with the narrative writing piece. Math teachers can either check the groups' event sheets or wait until the final submission which should include the narrative(s) and all game sheets used by each group. No rubric is provided here, as this should be specific to the type of grade students will be receiving and to the courses in which the grades will be recorded. However, there are several online resources, like RubiStar, which can help you generate a tailored rubric for your specific needs.
Here are two short video clips from Zombie movies that can be used to give students some context. Best if played on Gameday!
From Dawn of the Dead (language warning). The survivors are discussing a plan to leave the mall and use a boat to escape to an island.
From Shawn of the Dead (British Dark Comedy). The two protagonists are trying to figure out the best, most comfortable place to ride out the zombie invasion.
