The Prayer at Valley Forge, painted by Henry Brueckner and engraved by John C. McRae. From December 1777 to June 1778, Gen. George Washington led the Continental Army through severe hardship during its encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. It is thought that Brueckner's pious 1866 image conveys the concerns of the postbellum era rather than Washington's actual religious background.
