Students can elect to pursue an off-campus, traditional internship if they would like to have some firsthand experience with certain careers and fields. These fellowship experience allows students to connect with a mentor who is a current practitioner in applied STEM fields and includes on-site collaboration with the mentor at their office, lab, or remote contact. The senior capstone encompasses this mentorship along with a GSMST faculty advisor assigned to students as their teacher and on-campus support for both the internship and the documentation, reflection, and assignments associated with the capstone experience.
Mentors and students will be trained prior to the start of the fellowship on how to develop and assure a meaningful internship.
Students are required to secure their own internships. Our Internship & Partnership office does assist with placements by publicizing opportunities with our GSMST partners. Students then apply and interview for these internships through the GSMST Partnership Department to secure an internship. Students are encouraged to scout out some internship opportunities as well.
Students intern for at least 24 weeks: 12 weeks during fall semester and 12 weeks during spring semester 2. Students must satisfy the 165 hour requirements over the course of their experience.
Students can choose to create, design, or build their own engineered model, project, or product. We generally encourage students to focus on a potential solution to a real-world problem. Students must still find a mentor who has experience and expertise in the field in which their project fits; this mentor will meet regularly with the student to give feedback and guidance. Students may work on their projects in the mentors’ workspace, or they may work at home.
Students will have to pitch their project, including a clear plan on how they will accomplish their task during the school year.
Just like with an internship, students work on their substantive project for at least 24 weeks: 12 weeks during fall semester and 12 weeks during spring semester 2. Students must satisfy the 165 hour requirements over the course of their experience.
Students may only apply for pre-approved on-campus internships through the GSMST Partnership and Internship Department.
Students cannot create an on-campus internship directly with a GSMST faculty member.
Applications and placements for on-campus internships will be conducted in April-May.
Spaces are limited, and students with transportation considerations are given first priority.
