Overview
The Georgia Milestones Assessment System is a comprehensive summative assessment program. It represents a single system of summative assessments that span all three levels of the state's educational system – elementary, middle, and high school. The system is designed to send consistent signals about students' preparedness for the next level, be it the next grade, course, or endeavor, such as entering college or beginning a career after leaving the K-12 educational system.
Here are critical points about Georgia's Milestones
Purpose: Georgia Milestones assesses how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in state-adopted content standards for English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Assessment System: A comprehensive summative assessment program spanning grades 3 through high school.
Features of the Georgia Milestone Assessment include:
Georgia Milestones is administered on the computer for technology-enhanced items in all grades and courses.
Open-ended (constructed-response) items in language arts and mathematics (all grades and courses).
A writing component (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the language arts assessment.
Norm-referenced items in all content areas and courses to complement the criterion-referenced information and to provide a national comparison.
Transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration and paper/pencil as backup until the transition is complete.
Achievement Level Descriptors
With the implementation of the Georgia Milestones Assessment System, Georgia educators have developed four achievement levels to describe student mastery and command of the knowledge and skills outlined in Georgia's content standards. The four achievement levels are described below:
Beginning Learners do not yet demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia's content standards. The students need substantial academic support to be prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
Developing Learners demonstrate partial proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/learning course, as specified in Georgia's content standards. The students need additional academic support to be prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
Proficient Learners demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia's content standards. The students are prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia's content standards. The students are well prepared for the next grade level or course and are on track for college and career readiness.
