AKS: 4MA.D.6 measure time and objects that exist in the world to solve real-life, mathematical problems and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions (4.MDR.6).
Learning Target: I can use the four operations to solve metric measurement problems.
Today, you will engage in a collaborative problem-solving task using a 2-4-6-8 Protocol.
Listen carefully as I explain the structure to you:
2 minutes of independent thinking time
4 minutes of collaboration
6 minutes of independent work time
8 minutes of discussion, explanation, and justification with peers
After choosing the problem you would like to solve, each student in the group will have 2 minutes of independent time to make sense of the problem and create a plan for solving the problem. Take your time. Slow down and read the problem carefully to think about what is happening in the problem, not just the math.
After the two minutes of independent thinking, each collaborative group will have 4 minutes of collaborative time. Discuss the meaning of the problem and the plan for solving it. It may be helpful to use the Math Sentence Stems below.
After your group discusses the problem collaboratively and makes a plan for solving it, give yourself 6 minutes of independent work time. During this time, your group should put your plans into action and solve the problem independently.
After solving, everyone should discuss, explain, and justify their answers with the group for 8 minutes.
Now, mathematicians, it’s your turn - Solve one of these problems with your math group:
Use the 2-4-6-8 protocol as you collaboratively solve the task of your choice.
After you have completed your 8 minutes of discussion, explanation, and justifying of your answers with your peers, decide on your favorite strategies.
Be ready to share your favorite strategy or strategies on chart paper while doing a gallery walk.
